I just adopted a 1yr. old female maltese that was infested with fleas. Yesterday she had a series of shots, including rabies. She also had a chip implanted.
She is eating and drinking normally but after I bathed her with flea shampoo I noticed a little blood on the white towel. I put her in a diaper for an hour and when I took it off it was dry but there were little blood stains in it. It wasn't a huge amount. I checked her tummy and her hind quarters but there were no cuts or sores, no blood in her white hair either.
She seems to be acting healthy, following me from room to room, etc. What could be the problem?

I didn't think she was old enough to be in heat. She is only 1 yr. and 2 months old. No the vet did not warn me of otherwise. I adopted her from a private party and she is not spayed.

"When a woman menstruates it is impossible to conceive."
Sorry, I can't let this go. It is absolutely NOT impossible for a woman to conceive during her menstrual cycle. Shame on HelenES for spreading falsehoods about human reproduction. I can just see teenagers reading that and getting themselves into BIG trouble.
And please, get your Maltese spayed ASAP. There is just no reason to make more puppies. Your vet may prefer to wait until after her heat cycle though because of increased risk for blood loss. And she is absolutely old enough to be in heat. 6 months is normal. In fact, this is very likely her second heat.

Your dog is not to young to be in heat. They usually come in at 6 to 8 months. Is it coming from her back end where she poops or just on the diaper in places? If she had a lot of fleas that could be the reason..I have bathed a lot of dogs with fleas and the towel would be bloody from the fleas being washed off her.
Just keep an eye on her and see if there is any in her poo and if not she may be coming in heat or it could have been fleas. If she gets sick --take he back to vet and have her checked. I honestly don't think at this point you have anything to worry about. The vet would have noticed something out of the ordinary or told you if you should expect something different.

I could say that it's natural for the mum to have the liquid from the amniotic sac pop out in the course of the beginning, and a few very small quantity of blood could now not be unhealthy. If she traces to provide beginning for many years, do take her to the vet. In all of the years I had puppies I noticed particularly handy births, however one final Border Collie misplaced her entire clutter and of direction the domestic dogs have been useless earlier than supply, so she had a horrible time. I took her to the vet while the primary doggy was once born useless, and definite ample, all of them have been. I needed to cross by way of that trauma by myself, no person house to support, however fortunately my vet was once just a quarter mile from my residence. That could had been a satisfactory clutter, well bloodlines, however I'm simply pleased the vet was once competent to save lots of her existence. She lies at my ft as I kind this, and I'm so completely satisfied I made the choice to not wait any further. Toy puppies normally have a worse time of it in supply, so watch her cautiously. Good good fortune!

She is in heat. Get her back to the vet and have her spayed how, there are enough unwanted puppies in the world! Shame on your vet for not warning you.
By the way, dogs do not "menstruate" or "have periods", it is the absolute opposite. When a woman menstruates it is impossible to conceive. When a ***** is in heat, she WILL conceive if an entire male gets near her.

I would also guess she's in heat, but you may want to have a vet check to be certain since you just adopted her and have no idea when she was last in heat.
Also...if you don't intend to breed, spaying is a great idea. You don't have to deal with the mess in the future...and it significatly lowers the risk of certain cancers in dogs if done at a young enough age.

She is in "heat". Dogs have cycles just like women. She's menstrating. Keep her inside away from other male dogs.
