we awake every morning to pee in the kitchen on the appliances; bathroom floors; he pees on the furniture (is ruining it) and the hard wood floors; we've tried bitter apple; we've tried to rid of his scent. I suspect he's bored and defiant; any advise on breaking this habit of his.

First make sure there is nothing medically wrong with the dog. Rubbing their nose in it, doesn't teach a dog anything but to fear you. Same goes for spanking. Dogs have no sense of time and unless you actually catch them in the act, once they've done it, you're too late. Crate the dog while you're not home or sleeping. Take the dog out a LOT when you are home. Tell him to 'go potty', when he does praise and give him a small treat. The praise and treat must be immediately after he's done peeing. Like while he's in the process of standing back up. If he does pee in the house quietly take him outside to go potty. Screaming, yelling and being angry will only make it worse. As for removing the smell try something like Nature's Miracle. Bitter Apple is to deter chewing.

Firstly, bitter apple spray is to deter licking or chewing things. Unless you are spraying it in his mouth WHILE he is urinating on your things, you are misusing it completely. Make sure with your vet that he is not doing this because of any health problems, and then go from there. You need to crate train your dog. Get a routine. When you go to bed, put him in a crate for the night. When he whines, don't let him out. It's going to be difficult, because you're starting a little late (as the best time to train is when they're very young.) Most likely, he won't eliminate in his crate. Get one that fits his size- where he can stand and turn around in it, but not much extra room. If you're having trouble doing it yourself, contact a local trainer, or buy a book.

Please listen to all those who are for crate - training. I had the same problem & I tried everything. The crate training really does work. We have been doing it for about 1 1/2 months (?) now. I have 2 pups in 2 different crates. Between the two, we've only had a few accidents in the crates. It is a relief. Plus, you have more control of them all together. (No wandering, chewing, etc.) They learn to love it just as much as you, if done properly. Check into it. It is well worth the $.

I'm with you on this one.

I have a manchester terrier about the same age. I adopted him from the humane society but he had an owner before me.

Now sometimes he has to be left for about 9 hours a day and we understand if he has accidents but sometimes we'll wake up too and he'll have urinated somewhere.

Other times I'll be gone for 2 hours and he will.

But most of the time hes fine.

I keep a potty pad out by the door and I tried by his food and water bowl. He always goes pee on this one box I have.

One time he got on the coffee table and did it in the middle...?

I spank him and he doesn't do anything.

I need help too.

First make sure to neuter him if he isn't already. A trip to the vet might be in order if this is a new behavior, he might have a bladder or kidney issue. If you suspect he is bored give him something to do. A long walk every day and toys to play with would probably help. I am a big fan of crate training, dogs usually won't soil their den.

Walks, lots of them. Especially before going to work and going to bed, he will learn to come get you to take him out for a walk when he needs to go even if he needs to jump on the bed to wake you up. Make sure you walked him no more then 10 minutes before leaving for work, that way you know he's done everything he needs to do. Plus try patting him and talking to him before leaving for work, tell him you need to go to work and that you will be back home for dinner. Most of the time he will be mad at you for leaving the house without saying good bye to him so he will make a mess to show you that you upset him. So take him for lots of walks and talk to him and pat him before going to work. Having a dog is like having a child, need to treat them the same way to get the same response.

Has he been neutered?Has he been crate trained? Is something upsetting him? Has something new or different been added or changed in the family in the past few weeks? Or has he been doing this all along? If he is not fixed...Should do it. If he was never crate trained...that should be done also.

My advice is for him to sleep in a carrier for the night, they are less likely to do dirty business in the same place they have to sleep. I did that with my dog for a while and then she learned to hold it longer...also make sure you take the dog out before you go to sleep and first thing in the morning.
