about 12 weeks we were told but looks more like 8 - 10 to me (he will be taken to the vets tomorrow to see if they can guess any better) anyway, she will be cage training him, he was in a cage in the place she got him from so him being in there is no problem, however, they used to put paper in the cage fpr his toilet, does anyone have any tips on how to break that habbit and get him to toilet train outside?
Thanks

Oh, I am so happy for you. We have a 4 year old border collie, and we love him to death. He is SOOOO smart. We just took him outside alot, and when he peed we praised him. I'm not kidding, it took 2 days. We have a sliding door with a dog door panel, and he lets himself out. Before we got the panel, we hung a bell on the door, and he associated the bell sound with the door opening, and nudged the bell when he had to go out. Self taught in 2-3 days. Im not kidding, they are very smart. I've had dogs all my life from poodles, labs, retrievers, mix breeds, shepherds, and he's just the BEST!

Don't put paper in the crate and only give a crate that is big enough for him to turn around in and lie down comfortably. Dogs shouldn't go to the bathroom where they have to sleep. Because of the damage that the previos owners caused you may need to do the confined to a room paper on an area of the floor thing. Border Collies are smart so you shouldn't have to much trouble with training. Some words of advice get the puppy fixed as soon as possible Border Collies can be destructive and they need a job to do. My sisters Border Collie ate the curtains, the table etc. until she got him fixed and his job is to get the flies ( BIRDS) he doesn't catch them he just patrols the yard and runs them off and now he doesn't chew stuff up.

They sell crates that have adjustable dividers in them...this is what I would suggest. Your crate should be no more than 1 1/2 times the length of your puppy. Generally a dog won't potty where they sleep, so a crate any larger than this will allow a spot to potty which your trying to avoid. At 10-12 weeks old....he probably already doesn't remember there was paper in his crate before, so the adjustment will be quite easy. Make sure that he has no food or water at least 3 hours before bedtime. He will need to go outside 10 minutes after every meal or drink...and if he doesn't go potty, wait 10 minutes and try again....LOTS and LOTS of praise when he does potty outside. Will also need to go out right before you put him to bed for the night...

Make sure that you do NOT use your crate for punishment....you want this to be a happy place for your puppy.

Don't spank the puppy for pottying on the floor, and don't rub his nose in it..contrary to popular belief. Don't punish if you don't catch him in the act, just clean it up.....

When you do catch him in the act...Clap your hands or find another way to get his attention (don't yell at him)......then a firm NO and take him immediately outside.

Clean the area with water and white vinegar solution...this will kill the smell so he doesn't go there again....

this is how I've trained my pug puppy, and she has learned in about 3 weeks.....she has only gone potty in her crate once since I've had her...and that was the first night. She is, however, older than your puppy (5 months), so you probably should not expect results for some time....

good lord. sounds like someone was being lazy. the cage or crate is suppossed to be a training tool, not a toilet. the pup should be taken out pretty much every hour for a week or so. then every 1 1/2 hours for a week. then every 2 hours for 2 weeks. he needs time for his bladder etc to grow and mature. get stronger naturally and at a reasonable pace. dogs by nature don't like to lay in their own waste. as he gets better control you'll be able increase his time between trips outside. but don't push it. when you move up to 1 1/2 hrs, and on the 3rd day he has an accident at 1 hr 15 min, then you need to take him out at 1 hr 15 min for a few days. he won't develop properly and can have long term damage if you try to get him to hold it for 4 - 6 hours. and be patient. it won't happen over night.

If he's used to using the paper, slowly move it towards the door you want him to go to when he needs to potty. He may have an accident or 2, but be patient with him. He'll get the hang of it.

Keep taking the pup outside when it looks like it needs to go to the bathroom. Those are very smart dogs. We used to breed and raise them when I was a kid. Great dog to have. Good luck!
