He just follows his nose everywhere and digs under the fence.
I have a huge yard and dog proofing would be a nightmare.

That's what beagle's do, unfortunately for you and him----he's a scent hound---he just follows his nose.

You'll have to keep him on a lead, or resign yourself to losing your dog to a car, the dog catcher, or someone else with a fence.

You should be thinking about dog-proofing long before you get a dog. You don't even have to proof the entire yard... you can build a separate fence within the yard that will be safe for him. But if you arent willing to proof, I wouldn't let your dog in the yard without being tied up. They make tie-outs that are very long lines, so he won't be very confined. I normally don't condone these things, but it's much better than having your dog escape all of the time. You must remember that your dog is your responsibility 100% of the time; whether he is in your yard or not. If he bites someone while he's out, it's still on you. You say that dog-proofing your yard would be a nightmare, but wouldn't your dog being hit by a car an even worse nightmare??

I have a lab that is an escape artiest also.I did dog proof the bottom so she couldn't get out but she went over the top.And learned to open the gate.To smart for her own good. Unless you get under ground fence or chain her in yard it probably want happen. Some dogs just do it for fun....My girl thinks its a game. She would get out and run around to the front gate and wait for me to let her back in. She is now chained when she goes out, unless its raining and she don't like rain so she will go potty and come back in.

Should have read the breed standard for the beagle before buying one. That's what Beagles do...

Dig around your yard and below the fence, bury chicken fence, so that he can't dig under and thru. He'll quit when he realizes he can't get out.
Or build him a run in the yard where he CAN'T dig and get out, to keep him away from the insecure fence.

....Thaaaat's kind of what Beagles do. It was what they were originally bred for.

If you intend to commit to this dog for the rest of its life (another 10 years, or so), it would really be worth the time and effort to dog-proof your yard. Find the worst spots, and start there. You could also build a kennel run for him, and only leave him loose in the yard when you're watching. I'd recommend a kennel run over tying him out.

Good luck!

Get him a trainer and some obedience training. Beagles are notoriously adventurous. You may have to put a GPS on him if you do not want to dog proof the yard. Be sure he has his collar and tags on at all times and you should get the Vet to put a micro chip in his neck.

Bond with this dog. Make him like you and enjoy being in his current home. Let him stay inside at some times. If you shut him outside all of the time, he will seek company and refuge elsewhere. Another way to keep him in the yard is to chain him securely while he is outdoors until you get him trained better.

Beagles are known for that. You need to either go out with him, or put up a pen that he can't get out of.
