My lab won't stay out of the frickin' pond my husband has worked so hard on! She's 8 mos. old and so far she has done major damage and I caught her in it today AGAIN! I don't want to get rid of her but I have to teach Rosie to stop!!

It will be difficult to try to convince a lab that it shouldn't go in the water!!! Is there any way to put a fence around the pond?

In oder to train her to not go into it, you should supervise her when she is in the yard. When she goes near the pond, scold her, and if she starts walking away from the pond, praise her.

Since she sounds strong-willed, it might be better to put her on a long leash. Let her wander around the yard on the leash, but as she approaches the pond, give a little pop on the leash (not so you're hurting her, just so she takes it as a warning that she's doing something wrong) and tell her "no" or leave it. Once she stops pulling to go into the pond, praise the heck out of her. if this is successful, you may eventually be able to leave her off leash without her getting into the pond.

Again, labs LOVE water so you will have to put a lot of work into convincing her that she shouldn't go in it.

I have a question. Why did you get a "Lab" if you wanted your dog to stay out of the pond? Labs are well known for loving water!!! They ARE retrievers most are trained to retrieve out of the water during duck hunting season. I'm really assuming you know this about them. You probably won't break "Rosie" from getting into the pond, sounds like she already loves the water and probably always will. I suggest you find her another home if you don't want her in the pond and she needs a place where she can play in the water.

Labs usually love the water so a pond will be a big draw to her. Fence in the pond or keep the dog inside unless you can watch her. When you are both outside as soon as she starts to approach the pond scold her and give something else to play with. If you do that consistently she will eventually learn that she isn't allowed in that area.

Getting rid of a dog for doing what it was bred to do? That is not a solution. You took on the responsibility of the dog. Labs will be puppies until they die. You either put a fence around the pond, or do not leave her outside unsupervised, that way you can correct her when she does bad.

If I'm not mistaken, labs are water-loving critters anyway. Maybe ger her one of those small plastic kiddie pools that can be hers. Or I've seen notes about something larger from Rubbermaid (tm). (Check out the link.) Put some of her favorite toys in it so she'll know it's okay to play in it. Maybe get her a couple of new ones, squeaky water toys or something. Whenever you catch her going for your husband's pond, take her to her own 'pond' with her own things in it. Hopefully she'll get the idea that her 'pond' is more fun, has more things for her to play with, and doesn't get her fussed at by mom and dad. Good luck!

She is just having fun and it's also her way of cooling off on a hot day. Maybe if you try going outside with her and hosing her down with the garden hose while you are watering the plants then she will know that you will do this every time you go outside with her and she will stop going in the pond. But think of it this way, she is giving herself a bath and getting rid of the dirt on her paws so she won't drag the dirt into the house.

Labs love water; they are bred to love water it is in her genes and she cannot help it. Get her a play pool and fence off the pond. Labs need a lot of exercise so you should walk her several miles a day.

Hmmm, well im not sure about this one. My dogs have never been intetrested in water. I think you should have thought a little better about which breed to get. These dogs are made for water and if they find water, they are going to jump! U either get rid of the fancy pond or the dog...

Labs are water dogs. They love it. No if she goes in it now she want stop. Put a fence around it so she cant go in it or keep her fenced away from it. Sounds like she would make a good duck dog...I have 3 labs and they all live in the water if I let them.

Yikes, get rid of her cause a LAB won't stay out of the water that you put right there in front of her to taunt her? Put up a frickin' fence and keep her out of the stupid pond.

What do you do dangle her toys from the trees to tease her too ??
