I am considering adopting a puppy that my friends found. She's adorable and cuddly. I already have a shih-tzu and i want to find her a friend so this dog would be perfect except I need to know what she is! I will not adopt her if she appears to be a pitbull due to strict apartment/city rules and the safety of my dog. I understand that pitbulls are stereotyped the wrong way sometimes but its a risk i'm not willing to take. If she becomes more of a dane or a boxer i would be willing to take her. She is black and white. She is about 4 months old and 22 lbs. Her paws are pretty large. I have pictures that i can send if someone feels they can answer my question please e-mail me at lalbrigh@spt.com. otherwise, can someone tell me based on the weight and paws, etc. if this sounds like a pitbull? someone suggested a cross between a dane and a boston terrier. is that even possible?? thank you.

I HIGHLY doubt that the dog is part Dane. My dobie is only the small side, and at 4 months old she was already at 30lbs, so I think part dane is out of the question. It isn't completely impossible for a dane to become pregnant from a boston, but it is EXTREMELY unlikely and would only occur if someone intended it to happen. "Pitbull" is a common term for dogs in the bully breeds (bull terrier, am staff, and such). Either way, the dog is a mixed breed, so even if one parent was a pit, you will never know and neither will city/apt officials. If it is a mix, then that's what you write on your apt application and that's what she's written down as on a dog license you get from the city.

Its impossible for anyone to be able to tell you from your explanation, or from a picture unless they bred the dog. Vets are experts in animal medicine, not in determining a dogs breed (and most vets will be honest and tell you the same thing).
The most misidentified breeds, types, mutts, are those labeled as pit bulls. For example, a boxer mixed with a lab will look like a pit bull (a lab mixed with a lot of dogs are misidentified as pit bulls).
Just a quick note... I have been around APBTs my entire life, and have had countless children help me feed, water and clean my dogs and kennels, not a single pit bull, from my yard or someone elses has ever showed a shred of aggression towards myself or anyone else. The APBT is the only breed to have been bred to be specifically not aggressive towards people.

It isn't possible at all for anyone to tell you the breed based on the information you have given. I usually have a pretty good sense of breeds based on what they look like as puppies, so you can email me the picture if you would like. Wedontlikethat@yahoo.com
