We just got a new puppy. She's about 4 months old now. We are going to a family members place on the weekend just for the evening, but since she isn't house trained completely yet I don't want to give her the run of their house. We'd like to tie her outside, maybe bring her in periodically. How long can I leave her outside for? We will be visiting for about 5 to 6 hours. It's still a little chilly outside, but it is supposed to be 7C and sunny on friday... any answers would be appreciated. We're new to all of this! Thanks :)

We aren't leaving her at home, she is coming with us... And we do have a crate, but its too big to cart with us. I wouldn't be leaving her outside for the full 5 to 6 hours. I was just wondering if anyone new how long a black lab pup could stay outside for in nice enough weather... (we'd also be keeping an eye on her) Thanks :)

depending on her coat and the temp, she should be ok for 3 or 4 hours at a time. perhaps get her a sweater. and the more company she has the better. perhaps a young person could play with her once in a while.

Leaving a pup outside that young is not a good idea at all.
Anything can happen while your away. Another animal can come into your Yard and can do serious harm to your pup. Perhaps if you got a crate and placed the pup in there it would be a much better idea. If that is not an option then into a bathroom with anything taken out that could harm him could be another option. Get a baby gate to close off the door way. Make sure you take up the toilet paper too. This way yo will have peace of mind and be better to enjoy yourself without worring about the pup.

No, I wouldn't leave her outside either. My pup is 4 months also, and I couldn't do that to her, no matter how warm or cold it is outside. We have toooo many dogs/cats and other things here that could hurt her. I close my pup in our laundry room/back porch area when we have to go, so she doesn't chew stuff up! She happily goes in there as long as I remember to give her her little rawhide chew before I close the door.
I also agree with the others. Get, or borrow a crate/kennel or something like that for the evening. Or puppyproof (take out anything harmful,or stuff you don't want chewed!) and close her in a room, maybe without carpet. Make sure she's got her chew toys, favorite toys, and her favorite bed. And make sure if you're going to be gone that long that you have a neighbor check on her, and get some puppy pee pads just in case. If there's something in the room you KNOW she'll chew up, get some bitter apple spray and use it on the doorways, etc.

dont leave her outside at all unattended. get a kennel and leave her in the kennel and have a neighbor drop by to take her outside to potty really quick while you are gone.
you can also block off a small area of the house, a tiled hallway, kitchen, bathroom, laundry room- just make sure you "puppy proof" it. give her some chew toys to play with while you are gone so she has something to do. (like a kong) - do not give her rawhide, rawhide is TERRIBLE for dogs, esp. if they are not being watched while chewing. if you search rawhide on yahoo you can find a lot of info on why it is bad.

we have a 17 week old Goldie he stays out but has the heated utility a kennel with loads of warm straw and a large pen which he shares with his dad so they have play room i think the best thing to do is to have a space indoors like a utility you relay cant leave a dog on a rope they can get into a huge tangle and hurt them selves

I wouldn't leave her tied outside, there are too many things that could happen to her. Don't you have a crate for her? Or someone who could come in for the evening.

i would say that is cold to leave a 4month old out for 5-6 hours....if you can't take her with you the best thing would be to confine her to one room and put down potty pads or newspaper so she will have a place to potty if she has to....if you do leave her out i wouldn't leave her out for more than 1/2 an hour....shes really young to be out longer than that....

Intead of tying her outside, why not bring her in but keep her on leash or tie her to you? This way you can teach her how to behave properly while visiting, and it will be easier in future to bring her places.
