Dogs - March 2007

My dog is 6 month black lab. I would love to be able to let him hang outside when it's warm for an hour or two on his own. Currently, we have a chain for him in the yard, since we don't have a fenced in area. We will be moving soon and don't want to put up a fence. So, what would you suggest we do for puppy when it's nice enough for him to be left outside when it's nice out? This is my first dog, I've had cats before. I've heard about kennels and found this thing called an exercise pen. I'm not sure about either and would like someone with more puppy experience to help me. Thanks for your answers in advance. My dog loves to lay in the sun and I just want him to be happy this summer.

My mom is allergic to dogs and my brother is kind of I really want a dog and i have been waiting for a long time to have one. Im totaly devoted but it's just my mom. IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN HAVE A PUG? please Thank you very much for all your help if you do respond :)

I want to get a female and train her to be a fierce watch dog but also a true family dog and friend.I never had a shepered (but raised other gogs)but heard they are very smart but extremely stubborn.Any advice on training?Age it should start?ways to train them?Thanks

Has anyone dealt with Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue? I've sent in applications to adopt a Shiba for my fiance and myself, but they still haven't gotten back to me. Anyone had success with them? Any suggestions for things I can do?

Well, we already have 2 dogs in our family. A female yellow lab, and a male schnoodle (shnauzer poodle mix). My mom and I really want to get a chihuahua though. We found one that we really like...she is already neutered and is trained. The only problem is that my father will NOT get another dog. We want to just get the dog without saying anything to him...But, he will be very angry when he finds out. I say, we should just go for it. Too bad if he doesn't like the dog. It wouldn't be his responsibility anyway. I would like some opinions from you guys though. :] Do you think we should we get the dog, or not ?

My dog (a young beagle) is a little monster. He is actually a very sweet dog (he LOVES to be around people and be petted) but I cant even begin to explain how wild he is. I know its just his nature, but he is very frustrating for my family. He is always jumping up, chewing and nibbling on us (and the furniture, even the corners of walls) and has very high energy. This is after being very strict with him about not jumping and chewing. He also has a problem with eating EVERYTHING that comes into his path. He will eat rocks, pine cones, fuzz, ANYTHING. We feed him enough so he cant be hungry. We think getting an older, bigger dog (who has been socialized) might help him become more tame and calm, but is there anything else we can do, besides walking him excessively? Its a terror to walk him as well.

He is helthy, active and normal, however yesterday when he was sleeping next to me I rolled over and elbowed him by the ear/upper neck area. He cried alittle and then jumped off the bed and cired when he hit the floor, he went to his crate a wouldn't move around and would cry when I touched his head/neck area. I took him to the ER after about 1 hour of this, the on call doctor told me it was meningitis and he needed a spinal tap (at $3000) to determine what type he had, ethier infectious or steriod???
Nothing was wrong with hs blood test and his temp was at 103, which she said 102.5 is normal.

Anyway I do not have that kind of cash so I took him home with pain meds, and 2 types of antibiotics, he slept in his crate all night, woke up in the morning fine, then started crying and acting like before. He is laying in his crate now, still eats and drinks.
Any advice or ideas what it could be, please help ASAP

I have a pug, about 7 yrs old and she just had surgery to remove her uterus. She is recovering, but the only thing that i am worried about is that she is not eating a lot. She only picks at her food and might take some of mine if i give her a little bit. Any suggestions on how to get my dog to eat?

im pregnant and i have a 4 year old rottweiler i have only had him for a year and a half, he gets on great with my 8 year old daughter and my 4 year old son but with other people he dont know he growls at them. i love him but im not sure how he will react with a baby in the house. has anyone had the same problem?

My cocker spanials eyes produce a mucus similar to someone that may have alergies in there eyes. He also drinks water constantly, he will drink two large bowls a day. Sometimes he drinks so much he will vomit some back up.

i allready have two husky boys they will be 4 in aug, so i know how huskyies are.

the one is not fixed, how old is to old to mate him?
how many puppies can they have?
also he is black and white with blue eyes, if i got a female dog, red and white with blue eyes, what do you think the puppies would like look?
my other husky had two white parents but he is black and white?

My 4 month old Pom puppy was neutered three days ago and I am afraid he will tear his sutures or otherwise hurt himself with all his jumping around, running, and standing on his hind legs. (I stop him immediately and put him in his crate but he has been spending so much time there!) Of course, he wears his e-collar unless I am supervising him --as the vet told me to do. The vet told me to keep him in a calm state so I asked the vet how to do it. She suggested Children's Benadryl at 1/2 a teaspoon 2 times per day (3 times if he was super hyper). I have been following their advice but he gets jumpy and hyper only 4 hours after. How much Benadryl is the absolute max. I can give him in a 24 hr period without hurting him? **If you can't be civil or don't want to help, please don't bother responding.
