My 4 month old Pom puppy was neutered three days ago and I am afraid he will tear his sutures or otherwise hurt himself with all his jumping around, running, and standing on his hind legs. (I stop him immediately and put him in his crate but he has been spending so much time there!) Of course, he wears his e-collar unless I am supervising him --as the vet told me to do. The vet told me to keep him in a calm state so I asked the vet how to do it. She suggested Children's Benadryl at 1/2 a teaspoon 2 times per day (3 times if he was super hyper). I have been following their advice but he gets jumpy and hyper only 4 hours after. How much Benadryl is the absolute max. I can give him in a 24 hr period without hurting him? **If you can't be civil or don't want to help, please don't bother responding.

Why don't people read the whole question? Did they not read where I said the vet told me not to let my puppy have strenuous exercise?! What part of he is running, jumping around --on his hind legs, no less-- do they not understand? Thanks to those of you who actually read my question and honestly tried to help me.

The max dose is 1 mg per pound of body weight. Children's Benadryl is 12.5 mg per tsp, so your vet was right on the money with the dose he/she gave you. Stick to that dose and if it doesn't work, call your vet and try requesting Acepromazine (doggy tranquilizer). Ignore these people that tell you not to med your dog--they probably have never been at the other end of the surgery table trying to repair an incision that has come apart due to hyperactivity.

I want to say our puppy was around 10-12 weeks old when we started giving him Benadryl because he had allergies. We had to cut the pill in half because of his weight. The vet said the rule of thumb is 1mg per pound of the dog. My only concern is how do you know the puppy is having an allergic reaction? To answer your question yes it's okay to give the puppy Benadryl but its 1mg per pound the dog weighs but I suggest you taking the dog in.

I really don't know what the max is and I would only trust a vets answer but if it's not working (and sometimes meds don't work the same from dog to dog) then you need to try something else. I had a puppy hit by a car a long time ago and the same thing, he was SOOOOOOO hyper and we needed him to stay still and heal. They gave me pills of a very mild sedation, speak to your vet about those. They worked for me, sorry I don't remember the name. ........it was Metacam

Contact your vet and ask about a mild sedative - even a natural one - that you could give him. The most important issue is that he does not lick or chew at the surgical site. Activity may or may not disturb the sutures - ask the vet what type of suture they used as well.

I would think that 4 times a day would be safe, but if you need to give it any more than that you really should call your vet first to check. I think if you can curtail his jumping, running around should be pretty safe for a male - they don't have many stitches.

Give him 1 full teaspoon, every 4 hrs, the only thing it will do is calm, him down, till he heals.

no thats stupid. You can give it but most people give that when they're dog has allergies. I think you should get a second opinion. E collars usually will be all that you need since unless he drags on maybe sandpaper those stitches won't come out.

there is no reason to DRUG your dog.. neutering is a relatively simple operation.. and most dogs come home the same day, jump into the car that same day..... your dog will be fine.... no need to drug him..... society has turned in to a pill popping culture sick
