I have a pug, about 7 yrs old and she just had surgery to remove her uterus. She is recovering, but the only thing that i am worried about is that she is not eating a lot. She only picks at her food and might take some of mine if i give her a little bit. Any suggestions on how to get my dog to eat?

maybe you should ask your vet for a diet that is very easy to digest...I had a boxer that had surgery on her intestines and bowel, and she was put on a diet that wasn't as course and difficult to digest as regular food.

My dog is having the same exact problem. Her surgery was last Thursday. It is very normal for the dog to refuse their kibble after major surgery. She may not want it for as long as two weeks. Against popular belief, giving a dog some human food will not spoil them.* Try either boiled chicken and rice or lean ground beef and rice. I too was initially uncomfortable with this for fear of spoiling her, but how is she going to get her energy back if she will not eat? Also, make sure she is drinking and relieving herself normally. That is one of your biggest signs as to whether or not something else is wrong. Do not use canned food especially with the pet food recall. Even those that have not been recalled should not be trusted except for Natural Balance. They make their own food and do not contract out, so they are safe. If she is willing to eat other food besides her kibble, then it is probably just one of the after effects of surgery. If she is refusing to eat anything whatsoever, you need to call you vet ASAP. Every dog recovers differenty and being that mine has never had surgery before or never injured herself, the surgery and pain and everything else is just making her recovery slower than others. Every dog has their own personality so every dog will recover differently. Hopefully this helps and good luck.

Just like people, some take longer to recover than others. At the age of seven, she may just be slowing down. But, if she continues to eat poorly, take her to the vet. It will make you feel better if you just get it checked out. In the meantime, it won't hurt her to spoil her a little by giving her a little extra attention. She may even be mad at you for letting that bad old vet hurt her. Pugs are funny. But they are also very smart. She could just be punishing you. Be patient. If that's what it is, she will get over it. But, if this continues or she drops a lot of weight, please take her to the vet.

the reason she is not eating is because she is recovering from her surgery and might not have that big of an apatite. What do you feed her? Try giving her something special for a few days. My dog had surgery and I put Iams savory sauce on top of his dry food. He had never had it before and it got him to eat a little more. Try something like that if she starts to loose weight or get weak.

It is quite common for a dog to appear 'groggy' for a few hours after a general anaesthetic and it may sleep longer and more deeply than normal. Your dog may be a little unsteady on its feet. If your dog is hungry it may be given a small meal when you get home. Warming the food and feeding by hand may help if your dog has a poor appetite. (Occasionally, your dog may feel sick and may vomit. If this happens give it plenty of water but do not feed it for 24 hours.) A tube is put down your dog's throat during the anaesthetic to help it breathe and occasionally this irritates the windpipe and may cause it to cough for a few days.

She is probably weak. When my dog was runover, he would not eat, and the vet sold me a tube of tasty calories. You squeezed some into its mouth and he licked and licked it as it was stuck to his roof, and the more he licked the more he swallowed, and it gave him strength to eat. I then bought a whole chicken which I roasted, and put into small packets, in the frig, and three times a dag I gave him about two ounces of chicken meat, broken up. He soon began to eat properly.
You could also try cat food in a can, that is so much tastier than dog food. I believe it has more protein in it too.

She just had major abdominal surgery (she was spayed) and she's not a young dog. It will take her a little time to heal. She may also be nauseated from the anesthesia.

It won't hurt her to eat lightly for a few days. Call your vet anyway to ensure that s/he thinks it's expected behavior.

If this continues to be a problem, you should call the vet. When my dog was sick and wouldn't eat, though, the canned prescription I/D food did the trick. Good luck and I hope your dog is better soon!

call your vet because theyre is a recall some dogs are getting sick from the dog food and one of the first signs is that they dont eat. so call the vet to see if it is from the surgery or the food.
