labs are water loving dogs so are Newfoundlands and Chesapeakes it would be great if you can get a dog from a shelter because many of the dogs there are going to be put down because of over crowding but if you want a pure bred then you can go to a breeder

It's a better to adopt if you wish to have a companion. If you want to do some shows, find a breeder (although I alway think it is hard to find a good one)....
I think though its better to adopt. If you want a purebred, try to look for some rescues, although shelters may have purebreds in them too.
Breeds that like water? Well there's the retrievers type, like the Lab, Golden, Flat-coat, Cheasapeake Bay, Curly-coat, etc.
There's also the Portugese Water Dog (my friend has two) and they have hair so they don't really shed. There's also the Newfie, but they rescue swimmers if they need it or not. American Water Spaniel are also bred for retrieving game from the water. Same for the Irish Water Spaniel.
Hope you find a good dog!!

Definately the pound ! Those dogs are in desperate need of LOVE ! Their time is limited. Most shelters also spay , neuter , and give them shots before you even take them, often free or a lot cheaper than the vet. Also ask to see the one's on " doggy death row " first . Just as an option, you may find a very good companion that the only thing they were guilty of is being born ! It's really sad that there so many in this position ! Good Luck on your search !

Cocker Spaniels love water. But they aren't very good with kids or other pets and are known to be very jealous. I think it is a great idea to adopt a puppy from a shelter rather than a breeder. Then on the other hand how likely would it be to find a specific breed at a shelter? Go look around maybe you will find a perfect dog there.

Hey bud, this is the problem you encounter
when you get a dog from the pound. It's
a worshipful idea(?), but even if the dog
is only a year old, you are gonna have a
handful. It depends on how much patience
you have, 'cos some have been badly
abused. It's like what they say about an
elephant, if you know what I mean.
As for the "responsible" breeder, you
maybe ought to research and find out
who or what constitutes that.

Well labs love water!! I had a keeshond mix that absolutly loved the water also I don't know if its typicall of the breed though. Labs are the ones I see fetching sticks out of the lake the most though. I would watch petfinder if looking at a lab there are tons of them out there because they are so popular otherwise search for breeders if nothing in the pound appeals for you (the chemistry gut feeling thing) Good luck finding a new dog!

The pound. Think of all those animals being put to sleep. You could save one. I bought a puppy from a pet shop that said it came from a "responsible" breeder. She had all kinds of problems, emotional, physical, ect. I looked it up and it said she acted like a puppy mill pup. I hate puppy mills!
The Reason (to you from your rescued pet)
I would've died that day if not for you.
I would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes.
I would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands.
I would have left this life believing that all humans don't care
Believing there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted, skin that isn't flea bitten, good food and enough of it, beds to sleep on, someone to love me, to show me I deserve love just because I exist.
Your kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands . Your big heart saved me... You saved me from the terror of the pound, Soothing away the memories of my old life.
You have taught me what it means to be loved. I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me.
I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair ...Why you do it?
When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes . You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter Make just a little more room...to save one more like me.
I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes In the best way I know how Reminding you why you go on trying.
I am the reason . The dogs before me are the reason . As are the ones who come after.
Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given
We would die if not for you.

I say the pound, lots of dogs die because no one adopts them! Save a life! Labs and retrievers are good water dogs.
