Does anyone have any ideas on dog breeds which don't particularly mind so much being left alone for a working day 5 days a week?

8 hours a day is fine as long as that is all. Most people have full time jobs and their dogs are just fine being alone for a standard 8 hour work day once house trained. When you get home, whether you are tired or not, the dog will need a good hour of exercise plus some good cuddle time to make up for the time spent alone. I would NOT recommend a puppy unless you can leave it at a doggy day care or have someone come and take it out at least twice during the day until 6 months and at least once during the day until 10 months. 8 hours is just too long when they're younger than that. If you can ensure a 20-30 minute walk every day while you're at work for the rest of the dog's life, that would be ideal and a neighbor kid would probably be happy to do it for just a few bucks a week. Great Pyranees tend to be good with separation. They will want some attention but are not as needy as most breeds. They are longcoated so you would need to brush at least every 2-3 days to prevent matting. This is not a breed you shave down so brushing is mandatory. Clumber spaniels are another good breed. They're not as active as most hunting breeds and enjoy their leisure time. Again, brush every 2-3 days to avoid matting and they don't get shaved either.

No dog should be left alone longer than 4 hours.
As other people have said dogs are pack animals and love company.
If you do regularly leave a dog alone longer than 4 hours, your dog will find ways to amuse itself, and will be full of unspent energy on your return, so will need a lot of exercise to get rid of it (no in a back garden either)
Dogs are a responsibility, a very rewarding, loving one. But unless you have the time and energy to give a canine friend, then do think hard abou what is best for the dog.
Also, a puppy needs constant care and attention for the first few months of it's life, and if you leave a puppy alone for long periods you will more than likely find a fair amount of destuction on your return, which is no fault of the dogs.
Read up on your subject, Jan Fennell has written some great books which will help you understand things from a canine perspective a bit more.

Any dog can learn to be alone just fine. Here are some helpful things to do to make sure your dog won't suffer from separation anxiety:

Try to make your arrivals and departures very boring and low-key. Don't make a big fuss over saying hello and goodbye. Be very casual and up-beat.

Get your dog used to your getting-ready-to-leave cues, like picking up keys and jacket. Go through these actions repeatedly during the time when you're staying home, without actually leaving.

Give your dog something to do while you're gone. Stuff a Kong or a hollow prepared bone or hide several chew treats around the house. You don't want the only thing your dog can do is wait for you to come home.

No dog should be left alone all day through the working week, sorry but its as plain as that.Theres no dogs that are happy with that arangement, its no life for them and its cruel, certainly a puppy wouldn't be able to cope. The longest i've left my dogs is 4hours and when i got back they were so bored. If you are still sure that your going to get a dog and subject it to a lonely life then please consider getting a dog sitter who will come in and take your dog out etc, this is pricey but it's the best you can do for your dog.Rescue centers normally dont rehome to full time workers due to this problem, dogs develop many behaviour problems through beeing left all day and you should really reconsider getting a dog.A cat is more suited to this type of lifestyle as there independent, but not a dog.

Dogs are pack animals, and should not be left on their own for too long, 4/5 hours maximum, you could get prosecuted if you are reported for leaving a dog longer than that, the RSPCA's recommended time is 4 hours.

None If you have to leave a dog all day or for hours at a time 5 days a week get a cat or a hamster or a budgie or anything else but not a dog. Dogs are sociable. They need people around them.

It's hard on any dog to be alone all the time. Our family works, so we have two dogs to each other company and we spend a lot of time with them when we are home and they sleep inside with us at night. They also go to our friend's house once a week to play with their dogs. Doggie day care is also an option. They get lonely and they get bored so you need to keep them busy, exercised, and entertained.

No matter how many irresponsible people leave their dogs 8+hours a day 5 days a week, it doesn't make it right. No dog should really be subjected to that neglect. If you work full-time and have room for an animal, consider an indoor cat.

If your heart is set on a dog, be sure to find a doggie day care that fits your needs. Mixed breed medium-large sized adult dogs will handle it easier. http://www.petfinder.com

All dogs mind being left alone, they are pack animals and you would be its pack. Not fair to have a dog alone all day or even have one if you are not prepared to stay with it and let it share you life.
