I was considering health. It would be awful if the havanese comes down with a genetic health problem. So responsible breeders are the best bet. On the other hand, what about animal shelters? Will most of the dogs there have health problems? Thanks!!

...but still bothersome. I know that I may become used to the odor and guests of my home would smell it greatly. So, my question is...what's the best way to find the source of the odor? I somewhat recall a slight odor when the home was empty...and the previous owners had a dog. It's not an animal urine smell...but it could be a covered up one :-). Thanks so much!

A good friend of mine has just rescued this male Sharpa dog, who is loving, quiet and non-aggresive. However, the minute he is left alone, he cries, howls, and scratches if left inside. She has tried: leaving the door open so he has the run of the house & garden; leaving the TV on so he has something to listen to and walking him until he is worn out before she leaves. Nothing is working. Her neighbours are in an uproar and one made vile threats to harm the dog. She is getting so stressed she is considering having the dog put down. We live in Cyprus and do not have the likes of good back-up animal services. When he is with my dog he does not make a fuss. But, due to her situation she cannot consider getting a companion for him. He is a lovely dog, with many good years ahead of him. We are desperate to find a solution, so that she can continue to look after him and give him the life he deserves. Please give us practical ways of dealing with his anxiety.

I see people who actually do pick up after their dog. Then I also see them stopping to talk to people, with one hand holding a plastic bag, and they will use that hand to make gestures with....

All the while, they are holding this bag full of dog do while talking casually to people they meet, and I wonder if there is anything out of the ordinary about this or is it okay?

I don't hate dogs or anything like that. I just feel if you must have one, then it's a tremendous responsibility to keep it clean....so think it over before getting a dog.

You may enjoy that dog for all your own reasons. That's fine. Pushing the burden on others, or trying to impress people as to the unique qualities of the dog is not what people should do.

We are running out of open spaces for dogs, so anyone with some bright ideas as to how to clean up after them and keep their discharges out of public eye, is welcome here.

My dogs jaw has been quivering and this morning her eye has retracted slightly, and has difficulty opening her mouth wide. she still has healthy appetite and can see out of both eyes. looked up lockjaw but can't see how she could have contracted this as she has had no open wounds and has had no contact with cow or horse feaces. obviousley going to make vet appointment tomorrow but any help would be gratefully received.

she's always been posessive of what she percieves as "her" toys, but before she got spayed, she'd share. now, if our other dog or our cats get near her when she's got something she's playing w/or eating, she snaps at them, no matter if they're actually trying to take it from her, or if they're just walking by her. what's wrong, and what can i do to fix it?she's 4, and she got spayed last week.

Vet says it is a slight enlargement and wants to give meds to make the heart work more efficiently.
Is this a common thing? Can I do anything to help the situation? I wasn't there for his appointment? Thanks!

Its almost 4am and I am awake because my dog has been crying. She's a 2yr old rottweiler. Tonight she started shaking her head and whimpering so I'm thinking ear infection. She's had them before, but not for almost a year. I don't see any yucky stuff in her ear though. Also, a friend brought her puppy over today and they were playing - the puppy was nipping at my dog's face and ears but my dog didn't mind (very gentle dog). This pain that my dog has seemed to come on fast - she was fine before bed and now seems to be really miserable, scratching at her ear. I'm going to take her to a vet in the morning but in the meantime is there anything I can give her to ease her pain? ANd do you think its an ear infection or something to do with the puppy being here? I am dreading this because she REALLY hates her ears being messed with.
