Its almost 4am and I am awake because my dog has been crying. She's a 2yr old rottweiler. Tonight she started shaking her head and whimpering so I'm thinking ear infection. She's had them before, but not for almost a year. I don't see any yucky stuff in her ear though. Also, a friend brought her puppy over today and they were playing - the puppy was nipping at my dog's face and ears but my dog didn't mind (very gentle dog). This pain that my dog has seemed to come on fast - she was fine before bed and now seems to be really miserable, scratching at her ear. I'm going to take her to a vet in the morning but in the meantime is there anything I can give her to ease her pain? ANd do you think its an ear infection or something to do with the puppy being here? I am dreading this because she REALLY hates her ears being messed with.

Hope you got some sleep...You can give your dog baby aspirin for her pain. Children's Benedryl will help with the itching./scratching. It sounds like some type of ear infection. But it could be something to do with the other dog being there and nipping her ear, or something could have gotten in to her ear from all the playing.
Just get her to a vet to see what the problem is. Your vet will know what to do and treat it. Let the vet mess with her ears!! My dog hates me messing with her ears, but sometimes I have to. If she is that bad having her ears messed with, the vet can sedate her!! Usually they don't have to, but they can if it is huge problem.
Good luck

It sounds like it's an ear infection. You can give your dog a small dose of paracetamol for the pain. Maybe just one over the counter tablet. However, to solve her ear problem you need a product called Thornit (if you google it you should find it and I believe it is sold on e-bay!) and follow the instructions. Then to maintain a healthy ear just a pinch in each ear weekly should keep all her ear problems at bay.

I wouldn't give her anything. Can you contact an emergency vet?
You could try warming a towel and holding it on the ear and see if that helps if you give her anything for pain it could be fatal because I KNOW IF YOU GIVE A CAT ASPIRIN IT WILL KILL IT. GOD KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO A DOG. A night of no sleep is better than having no dog.

Yes, it sounds like an ear infection. Antibiotics are in order so you need to take her to the vet. Ask them to give her Rimadyl which is a dog version of Tylenol. Good luck!

You can give her an aspiring, but makes sure she has food in her tummy. And Benedryl, dogs tolerate Benedryl very well. It can help with any inflammation. I'd give her 2 over the counter pills.
