Vet says it is a slight enlargement and wants to give meds to make the heart work more efficiently.
Is this a common thing? Can I do anything to help the situation? I wasn't there for his appointment? Thanks!

Heart enlargement does commonly occur in older small breed dogs. It needs to be monitored closely as it is one of the first warning signs of possible heart failure. Medications can help the heart function better. I would recommend having your vet refer you to a cardiologist who can do an echocardiogram to give you a definitive diagnosis on how the heart is functioning, and they will probably recommend repeating this test yearly.

Important signs to watch for: lethargy, exercise intolerance, coughing or wheezing, or sounding congested in the chest. All could be signs of heart failure and should be immediately addressed. If you ever have to take your dog to another vet or emergency clinic for some other type of treatment, make sure you mention this to them. Dogs who are in or near heart failure must have the amount of fluids they receive monitored closely. Its also important to try and avoid steroid use if possible, as that can also push a dog near heart failure into it. Good luck

I would talk to your vet, is the enlargement permanant or as a result of an infection which could be cleared up using antibiotics? If it is permanant then you will need to ensure that your boy doesn't carry any excess weight so make sure he is nice and slim. Also try not to allow him to get too over excited. He will still need regular exercise so don't stop taking him but more frequently but shorter distances may be better.

If you weren't there, then CALL HIM up. Ask him those questions.
