Dogs - February 2007

I have been showing dogs for many, many years. I always get the same questions - How much money do you win?
Yet people who participate in EVERY other hobby are not expected to win money.
Why is it that people make fun of it just because they don't understand what showing dogs is about?
Would it hurt people to just GO to a dog show & ASK the exhibitors - Hey - what's this all about?
You can even go to the AKC website OR to the Westminster Kennel Club website & read about dog shows & then you won't have to attack the sport because just because you are jealous.

under his 2 front legs, like the armpit i guess you would call it. he has 2 sort of bubble like rashes. idk what they are and how they got there but he constantly licks them, like a peson licks their lips when they have chapped lips, what is this??

i dont like the idea of havin to show off dogs as a matter of "my dogs beautiful, he has to win or i wont be happy"... whats wrong with these people that do feel the need to show their dog? I think that its like having a little child going to the beauty pageant and its really, a massive insicurity on the owner/dad/mother side....

what do you think?

When ever my mom yells at me, or me and my brother fight, or something he gets in their face and growls, and only threatens to bite them, he raises all the hair on his back and gets between whoever it is, and me and wont let them move untill i okay it, or reassure him, but he would never bite them. i have had dobes all my life and i know thats what they are bred for but, i have never had one who was this protective of me. i mean its a good thing sometimes, like when i was at the petstore and a man kept following me, and finally just grabbed me when i was trying to hide, thank god i had Hammer, or i dont know what would have happend. but in the end the man had 62 stiches, and was arrested. but i dont know, any ideas whta i could do to reduce the over protetion of me? he does listen when i tell him to stop, or its okay, and he only reacts when im stressed, scared, or upest. but still what else do u think i can do with out taking ALL the protection out of him, and obvioulsy, i need
it!

i mean breeds such as bulldogs, bull terriers, american staffies, english staffies... and all these cool breeds. Whats up with all these gay dogs like shitzu, poobles, miniature this and that....

My 1 year old dog is currently somewhat paper trained on those training mats from the pet store. However, she still has some accidents and I've read that it's because the mats are indoors so she thinks it's ok to go in other rooms of the apartment.

I would like to retrain her to use the bathroom outside only and ring a bell when she needs to go. Currently she goes when I take her outside twice a day, but she'll use the mat indoors at her leisure. If I just remove those mats will she start going around the house or will she hold it until I take her out? Unfortunately I don't have a yard for her to go out to on her own.

My bro-in law is a biologist and hunter. He despises city people that dont hunt who get labs. He loves his dogs and knows they need to hunt occasionally to be happy. So why do so many city people get large working and sporting dogs when they will NEVER use them for what they were bred for over generations. Why do they get huskies that were bred for sled pulling and need to run a long way every day to keep from going crazy?WHy do they buy pit bulls which were bred for dog fighting? Is it animal cruelty? Do they do it for their ego or as a fashion statement? Why?

My dog is usually very hyper and energetic but today she has been acting funny. She just keeps laying around and zoning out and she won't move at all. She moves her head but other than that she won't move. She can move she just won't. I layed out a biscuit and she usually hides them but she didn't touch them. I gave her some ice and she ate it then I gave her a little piece of cheese and she ate it too. I was just wondering what was wrong and if I should take her to the vet?

I got my chihuahua over a month ago and he is really great, everything is wonderful. I put him in a crate next to my bed at night (to help with the potty training, blah blah blah). His whining has drastically gone down but he still does it a little before he goes to sleep. I do everything i was told to do, not acknowledge it. I was just wondering, do you know if he will ever completely stop or is a little bit every night normal?

I have just moved to Auckland and am looking to buy either a Maltese breed puppy or a young dog. we prefer female. willing to pay if not too expensive. We have had different pets over the years and have had three maltese previously so our family can be trusted :-) if you, or anyone you know, wants to sell/give away a maltese breed please let me know. if not do you know a site than i can find one on?

Now his elbow has swelled and he won't put any weight on it. It doesn't hurt him if you touch it or move it. I was wondering if it is just a sprain or if it something more serious. How long does it take a sprain to heal? Is there anything I can do to help the swelling go down?

i live in a rural area and she seems to be staying in the yard but every time i open the door and call her she runs off i have tried bribing her with treats. she'll bark all night and will keep me and my mom awake(she's a rat terrier) doesn't work any ideas? thanks a bunches!! hope your ideas will work!

i have a 8 month old girl i got her a couple of weeks ago.i don't know if she went into heat or not before i got her.is there a way to tell if she went into heat before i got her? are there any signs i could look for ? no im not going to breed her and no she doesn't need to be fixed.there are no males around her ever!!

i have a miniture chihuhua named Zoe Lynn and when we first got her she suffered many siezures and we think she suffered a stroke cause she is a little dense and she always sticks her tounge out on one side only...if you put her by your face to lick you she can only do it on one side...anyway since she is not so smart we can't potty train her so we bought her diapers, well the diapers keep falling off, so i put her bathing suit on her to see if that would keep the diapers on. Well i guess the bathing suit irritaed her and now she has like a sore mark/ dry skin on her side. Can i put lotion on it? Its not an open sore or anything, it just looks like she scratched it too much....any advice would help and with the diapers too.... I don't want to give her away but i don't want her having accidents on my carpet and she is soooooo small to take her in the cold to potty and the pads don't work....she always forgets to go on them and i hate to yell at her since she was so sick in the past :(
