Now his elbow has swelled and he won't put any weight on it. It doesn't hurt him if you touch it or move it. I was wondering if it is just a sprain or if it something more serious. How long does it take a sprain to heal? Is there anything I can do to help the swelling go down?

Spraining an elbow would be very unlikely. At 4 months there are lots of growth plates on the bones...these are weak spots that can be broken. If he is not putting weight on it by tomorrow, then I'd have the vet check it.

Yes, there is immediate first aid. Vets are hard to find on a Sunday. Cold pack the area off and on for about 10 minutes or whatever the pup will hold still for. Cold reduces inflammation to area swelling. Once you have cooled the area a bit you can gently massage and feel for anything that seems "not normal". He will let you know if hurts and where.

Pups are pretty hardy and do a lot of things to scare us! The only safe pain reliever would be a "baby" aspirin. But the cold pack will do the same to take down swelling. I would suggest crating or limiting his activities best as possible. If really hurting that shouldn't be a problem. Dogs aren't dumb.

It may just be an angry joint with some muscle spazzing in area. Try very gentle massage of that whole leg starting up in shoulder area. Small delicate breeds like the chi, poodles, etc are more at risk for injury. By tomorrow you would change to warm packs to soothe the area.

This does not appear to be a urgent find a vet asap situation. Keep him rested tonight and close by. In the morning observe closely, do warm packs. Watch for increased swelling and not using leg. If in doubt do call his vet. Better safe than sorry. Might be fairly serious and don't want to risk long term damage.

Or he may be much better in morning and up and moving. TLC goes a long way.

He may have broken it, but I doubt it, probably just a sprain, keep him quiet,(if you can )if not improved in a few days see the vet, you could try an ice pack on it, for a short time a couple of times a day.
Poor little thing.Good luck Don't let him jump he's too little

As with human injuries, sprains and breaks First Aid Remains the Same. See a doctor if there is concern for fracture. If you are sure it is a sprain Ice for first two day then apply heat.

wrap the leg loosly so he understands it hurt even though the young pup is willing to go. its mostly a bad monkey bump or a minor sprain. keep him confined so he dosent move aroung a bunch. put some ice or frozen peas on the swollen area. a small amount of asprin about a half for a 35 lb dog will also help. ASPRIN NOT TYLENOL. TYLENOL CAN BE DEADLY!!!
