I agree that you have gotten good advice. I would try hydrocortisone cream after an oatmeal shampoo or aloe vera or sulfadene bath. Be sure to rinse the dog very well after his bath. I would also try the benadryll to reduce the dog's licking while the area heals. If this doesn't start to make a difference, I would take the dog to the vet.

Only your vet can tell you for sure what it is. It could be food and/or plant allergy, yeast, or unrinsed soap from a bath, something the dog got into outside, a bug bite--I can't tell from here. I have had good luck with using people medicines for stuff like that, but you have to be careful. You can probably take a 4 hr Benadryl (not the long-lasting stuff) and break it in half and try that without doing any harm, and it may help. If it's a yeast infection, you can try some Tinactin, and if it's an allergy, you can try some Hydrocortisone cream. But if the dog is licking the area, that won't help much. At the pet stores they have bad tasting medicines for "hot spots." The stuff has never done my animals any good, though. I have found that the most important thing to look for with doggie skin ailments is the SMELL. If it smells bad, you are dealing with some kind of infection and need to see the vet. The other important thing is whether it has been there a long time or not and whether it seems to be getting better or worse. In the majority of cases of my dogs with skin problems, thyroid problems have ultimately turned out to be the cause, but sometimes it takes years to figure that out.

My dog had the same thing a few years ago during the summer. The vet said it was a rash from rubbing and the heat, they perscribed cream for her. it cleared up in no time, i think it is some kind of cortizon cream.

You've gotten some good advice so far... just wanted to reiterate how important it is not to let him lick at them. Excessive licking is just going to make whatever is going on worse - if you have to put a t-shirt or doggie sweatshirt on so he can't get to the sore spots

Tumors are common in these dogs. I have had two daschunds myself. You might want to have it checked out. It could also be a skin growth, but doubtful with their locations. Might want to have it looked at.
