A chihuahua is a bad dog for a family with small children. In addition to the fact that they are more likely to be injured by a small child who means well but doesn't understand its fragility, a small child is also more likely to be injured by the chihuahua. Chihuahuas are not very patient with small children who like to handle them. Our chihuahua, who is otherwise a very sweet and loving girl, has bitten our daughter on numerous occasions.

However, if your children are older than, say, eight, then a chihuahua would probably make no better or worse a family pet than any other dog. Keep in mind, though, that chihuahuas tend to be a "one person dog," and so you might have children who are disappointed that the little doggy they adore doesn't return their affection. The chihuahua will likely claim "ownership" of the person who is his or her primary caregiver (ie, who feeds the chi, who takes it outside to go potty, who takes it for walks). Your best bet is to spread those responsibilities around to encourage the chi to warm up to more members of your family.

Chihuahua is a Chihuahua is a Chihuahua. There are no mini Chihuahuas or pocket Chihuahuas. They are a small breed but tend to be protective of family, territorial and bad social skills. This breed can be a great option for a family with lots are hard work and dedication. yeah actaully they are very good dogs...loyal wise but the only problem is that they're so small if you have children under 8 it might not be a wise decition to add this pet as an addition to ur family. because children might fall or play to roghly with the animal and ie seen pocket dogs be sqished to death becauuse of an accident like the child was too rough...

Chihuahua's are GREAT dogs. One thing I can not stress enough is that they come with a bad reputation... but it can be avoided!!! I always thought that they were nervous and yappy but not if you do things right with them. They are needy and really like to be around their owner. I was told that they usually bond with just one person, but if you socialize them right they can be friendly with everyone (like mine!).
Chihuahuas will love you more than any other dog, they are just adorable and so much fun.
I really really recommend the book Chihuahua's for Dummies if you are really serious. The introduction is great because it helps you decide if a Chi is the right pet for you.
Good luck!

sometimes or most of them have a flap in back of there throat ant it gets stuck closed and they choke...i have that breed of dog and they are very protective and dont like outsiders as much as some dogs do...if u get one be sure to get its shots every year cause they r prone to getting sick...they have a lot of love for thier master but if ur kid is younger they r not a social and jumpy ...they r little nervous dogs and remember when they r held or hurt by younger kids...they like the laid back life!!!
