Dogs - February 2007

We have a black lab, Ebony, and a yellow lab, Gunnie... Ebony itches like crazy! She will sometimes lose her hair! The vet recommends an allergy shot, only problem is $50 a month! Gunnie doesn't itch but he sure does shed! You can pet down his back and get a handful. I'm just wondering if there are any cost effective treatments out there and/or if you know what may be causing this. They are both inside, spoiled rotten, fed Iams lamb and rice, and are our babies. I really don't want to spend alot. I love them both, but come-on... my meds are only $7 a month :)

Even if he bite it me two times im still not angry to him, he has been attacked once with a hatchet at the neck, and i think that could be his problem, maybe he has mental problems now?

Recently, my family pet died, and I'm trying to search for a new dog. I want to get a dog of the same breed (He was a Tibetan Terrier). But since the breed isn't as common as most, I've had trouble finding ads in the Newspapers. I've also asked a breeder near me, but they said they wouldn't have puppies until the fall; but I'm not sure if I can wait that long without a dog.

Are there any place you can check in your town for puppies? I've tried online websites, but have so far found nothing, and they didn't have any at the animal shelter.

i just got a new pug. i dont even know his age. i have 2 cats inside the house so i dont want to bring him inside because im sure theres no way they would get along. i also have two dogs outside. both of them are mixed. one is a mix between labrador and pitbull so you know she isnt that nice. the other one well im not sure but is a medium sized dog that looks like a husky but isnt. the pug is a neutered boy and the other 2 are girls. from what they have seen of each other, my two dogs dont seem to like him at all. i wanted to know if they would ever get along or if i would have to give the pug away.

My pet schnauzer just had her first litter and she had five. She had no problems with having them and did it all on her own and she is perfectly well now. It was two nights ago when she had them. There are four really healthy looking pups and one runt. He seems to be laying and not moving like the others. He doesnt seem to be drinking because im afraid that he is to weak. I also just noticed that he has a little bit of foam coming from his mouth or nose. I am so worried. If its okay then how can i help the pup eat more and the pups are getting their tales cut off at the vet tomorrow so should i worry about the pup and let the vet know of this problem?

I am 12-I was wondering if it was the right choice to wait to get a puppy untill summer?Then i will get money for mygrades-and on may 27 i turn 13! I think it might be better to wait because if i dont have to go to school,i will be able to spend time with the little guy! Its a really hard decision but right now-i just dont have enough money to support the puppy- and i only get $5 a week! Its hard though because i want a puppy so bad!I know in my heart i should wait but.....

I have a rescued maltese yorkie mix, and she only weighs 4 pounds. My neighbors chihuahua somehow got in my fence when I let my baby outside to do her business. They got locked together, and I hosed him off. What I need to know is can I abort the puppies, and have her spayed if she is indeed pregnant?

I know two people who have female dogs that "hump" things and other female dogs, but is this really possible?

I recently got a dog and she is about 4 months now and she is acting weird...it is as if she tries to "hump" my leg.

isnt this strange behavior for a 4 month old dog? I mean she is still a puppy and all. I thought dogs only become sexually active when they are about 6months-1 yr old

Can someone answer/explain this?

Importance of characteristics in this order:

Compatible with small children.
Minimum shedding and grooming.
Under 50 pounds.
Medium activity level.
Obedient.

We don't want to spend a lot of money and we would love to adopt an animal from the humane society, however our local humane society has slim pickings, mostly cats.

Our springapoo mix is 12 years old and recently began to lose hair in a large patch on his back. We took him to the vet, and he's convinced it's not mange or anything like that. They ran a test to check his thyroid and it came back completely normal. The vet said we could also check for cushings (sp?) but its 200 dollars and he thinks it will probably come up negative anyway. Any ideas on what this could be? Do old dogs just go bald like people can?


He's had no diet change, no new hair products, nothing.

my dog has been at biting his butt for years now...but it seems to progressively getting worst lately...now it is getting a bit bloody...
it just occured to me that maybe there is something wrong with him??? the vet has never said anything about it..
he doesn't have fleas now...
whether i bath him or leave him without a bath for a few months, he keeps at it everyday?
why and what should be done?
