I have been doing alot of research about this breed and have decided to get one. I have located a breeder and will be picking her up tomarrow. I am very excited, however If anyone has any advice about pit bulls I'd really appreciate it.

Have you seen this site? ...........

I love this one and I think it's very informative. You didn't say if your dog was a puppy or a dog. If it's a dog, I would recomend copying the part on this site about temperament tests that you can do on the dog. If the breeder doesn't want you to do it, I would say it's a bad sign. How well did you check out the breeder? Is it a backyard breeder or a professional? Will you get papers on the dog? All this stuff is very important.
I would also recommend you get it training somewhere where they do positive reinforcement. Never hit the dog. Never leave it (or any other breed of dog) alone with small or irresponsible children. Be sure you have the right attitude where you know you can always be calm and assertive with this dog. Do not leave it tied up in a backyard alone. It's also important for your dog to have a lot of socialization. Also, I would get the dog fixed. It's healthier and it will make you look like a much more responsible Pit owner. All the advice I've seen so far that everyone else has given you is very good. Including watching the Dog Whisperer. I believe he did a few episodes devoted to just Pits too.
This is a huge responsibility you're taking on. These poor dogs have a really bad rap thanks to bad breeders and bad owners. Please be sure to do all the things I have down and what everyone else has written. They need a lot of good owners to help get them a better image.
Sorry about the speech. I'm a Dog Training Instructor. We have a lot of Pits in our area. Many are with good people. It really breaks my heart to see them with the wrong ones. I'm very passionate on Pits getting a better image. These dogs are so beautiful and their eyes have a sort of quiet wisdom to them. They are so full of love for humans. I love all dogs, but I'm a sucker for the underdogs. ; )

I have 3 pitbulls, one purebred, one cross and one Staffy. The staffy isn't really a Pit Bull, but according to alot of people he is.

Start training her as early as you can, don't ever let her bite and just for a little reminder, they take ALOT of work.

I have 3 pit bulls myself. They are wonderful dogs with great personality. Prepare yourself for some fun with your pit. They are always willing to please their owner and are very loyal. Make sure you also inform people that frown upon pits know that you know about YOUR dog. Let them know and take care of her. They are wonderful family dogs too. I have 3 little cousins, and a little niece and nephew and they can play with my pits and I dont have to worry about them getting hurt or anyone trying to take them. They will be loyal to you even if you arent loyal to them.

OK first always, buy from a breeder that knows the history of the parents and blood line. You do not want any agression or any temperment from either sides. Do not raise them wrongly cause thats how yu see the pits on the news tearing into there owners or people. DONT buy if you dont know the history, no background knowlege is bad. You may end up buying a dog full of agression.

Give them lot's of love. Treat the dog how you want the dog to treat you. Pitt's are not bad its the owners that make the dogs bad. I have owned them since I was a child, and me and my children are still alive. They are very loving, beautiful dogs. My domino will not let anyone he doesn't know get close to my kids who are 5, 3, and 1. They just need to be loved, and they do like to eat alot. Just make sure you can afford to take care of it. Good luck to you and your new baby.

I just got a pit bull pupp (about 5 months ago..ok, she's not pure. she's pit and lab) and she is just wonderful..I love her to death, and know you will love yours.
Ok, first and most important..excercise excercise excercise..pits are high energy dogs and need tons of it..I suggest you get a bike or roller blads and get going...unless you are a big runner, I can tell you your pup will need more harder excercise.
Watch a number of dog whisperer episodes..the more the better..he deals alot with pits and really understands pit psychology.
be prepared to take lots of time to teach your doggy manners and take him/her to training classes..many people are afraid of pits and the more well behaved pits there are out there, the sooner we can squash the idea that these dogs are dangerous.
congrats and good luck!

Yes. If you've already choosen your dg... good luck. If you haven't, here are a few tips to make sure you get the best dog possible!

*Check for fleas and/or ticks.
*Make sure the animal is nice (if you have young children or kids, this might want to be something you would like to look into.)

That's pretty much it. I used to have a pitbull named JoJo and he NEVER EVER EVER EVER growled or bit anyone he wouldn't hurt a fly. So good luck with your new pet! P.s you might want to get a baby (so it will be easier to train)

I have a five year old male pit named Max. I have owned him since he was two weeks old. He is my constant companion. I have noticed over the years that he doesn't like it much when people shout or get angry around him . He is a very good dog. Very protective, loving, loyal, funny...just the best. He sleeps with me in bed every night (I am single). I know he misses me when I leave, I can see the look in his eyes. His favorite food is french fries from McDonald's! I always try to be calm and assertive with him. Good Luck with your new baby. Please keep her in the house. In my area folks like to steal pits from people's back yards. I never let Max out unless he is with me on the leash. To me there's nothing cuter than a pit bull puppy. You didn't mention how old she is. Good Luck and have fun with her!

have a pit.........best advice is be firm but gentle ALL they want to do is please their humans....makes sure they know where they come in the food chain........feed EVERYTHING before they get fed..........

Get a good vet that is happy dealing with pits and get her / him used to being bathed at home..they do get skin irritations and [a] it cost for others to do it [b] LOTS of places do not / will not treat pits.

Get ALL the shots done and ensure they are on heart worm, just paid out over $900.00 for heart worm treatment so my baby did not die.

They are NOT always very sociable to other dogs.....try your best to get them to meet others but ours is just not good enough to be totally sure around other dogs so dog parks are out for ever with her.

Get her used to a chest harness rein set......these are the best for their build and bulk with no dragging at the throat.

HAVE FUN...............ours loves to be dressed up and loves her ducky rain coat
