Because he is young. As all puppies age they mellow out. Shih-tzus ARE very gentle dogs, but they also have a lot of energy, even when they're older. They love playing, and when they're older the rough play usually stops.

My girl is 2 yrs. old. Greets everyone at the front door as if she just ate catnip. She still to this day is very I'd describe as crazy. She will be wagging her tail, run around the room, jump off chairs, couch, etc. for at least 5 minutes until she calms down. Once adjusted to the visitor or even us, her owners returning home she is very hyper and loving. Most loving dog I know, she goes everywhere with us. We are part the problem she gets gift for every occasion like a human would.....Guilty loving our Shih Tzu, named RAVEN....from Baltimore.

He's a puppy. It's up to you to break him of the rough play through training... but he'll be hyper for quite some time

the answer to this is no science. your dog is still a puppy! even at 3 months dogs may tend to be somewhat hyper. i have a shih-tzu myself.....it took her about a whole year to get out of that hyper stage! and even still she has not grown out of it fully! give him some time to grow......and remember.............PLAY FULL DOESN'T MEAN HYPER! lol

because the dog is a puppy.when you have him neutered he will calm down but he is just a baby now.
