I am considering to get a bird or a rodent (probably a guinea pig, but hamsters and mice are considered) what are the downsides of getting a bird? I will probably get a parakeet.

Can you feed parakeets bread, crackers, boiled eggs, or peanuts? I heard yes and no.

Could it be the furnace fooling him? I have been finding small down feathers under his cage. He does scratch a little bit now and then but has a good appetite and I don't see any signs of sore or raw spots...this has been going on 4 or 5 weeks. When do they usually molt and could this loss of down feather be just a result of preening? Or could tis be that furnace is coming on more often due to cold weather here in Indy?

They are well fed and watered and are both females in a nice big cage, and they go outside when the weather is nice, but during the winter they drive me NUTS. I've tried covering them with a blanket to no avail.

Thanx!

We are a family of "hand me down pets". We were recently given a green quaker bird. I know nothing about them. Any info you can offer will be a great help. Thank you!!!

My sister in law breeds birds and offered to give my daughter a baby blue crown. My daughter stays at her dad's house every other week. My question is whether I should send the bird with her or keep it at my house. I know they can be sensitive to changes, but if it was used to it since it was a baby would it be ok? I want it to really bond with her and if she only sees it every other week I don't think it will.

He's a MAJOR companion bird and he loves to me to rub his neck... I'll have to grab him to get him out of the cage, or just wait holding the cage door open till he climbs out, then carry him to the bathtub to try nd get him to step up...If I put my finger and put up on the area above his feet, he'll back away, then put his head down and wait for me to pet him. I'l ignore him, and he just sits there, doing the same thing. I'l return my finger and he'll just keep his head down for me to scratch it...
