The birds? They dont cry. The sound they make is thier call for mating, nesting, etc. It does sounds mournful but it certainly isnt crying. all birds have unique calls, the dove just tends too sound forlorn but most doves on my property sound pretty happy. As for mourning doves sometimes the sound you hear is their feathers when they take off from the ground. It is not a cry at all, but the sound of the feathers are they head for the sky.

They don't exactly cry, they coo; but at a distance it can sound like crying. That is how the "mourning dove" got its name. They coo to call to one another, in the daytime and on nights with a full moon.

When they are released during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, fly up and land on the cylinder that is about to be lit with the Olympic flame, and then the flame is lit!
I think it was the L.A. Olympics where this happened! Fortunately, they did not cry for long... they simply "Yelped" and then were "part of the Olympic spirit... permanently!"

It was a scene that few people who witnessed it have forgotten!
