Identifying wild birds is best undertaken by recording as much data as possible.
1) Plumage-Some birds may be identified by this alone if their plumage is distinctive/individual.
2) When unable to identify by plumage alone use reference book and adopt process of elimination -
Habitat? Where you saw the bird-what type of environment was it in-field-woods-coastal-urban-moors-lake/estuary?
Feeding? Was it feeding-if so on what?Is this characteristic?
Size? Does the quoted size match with what you saw?
Call/Song? Listen and remember what the bird's call was
Solitary or in flock? Some birds are essentially solitary others prefer to stay in groups
Time of year? Summer /Winter visitor or resident? Right time to see this bird or not.
Characteristic Markings? Anything that struck you e.g.Eye stripe/color of legs/
Flight? Distinctive flight pattern?

When you see any bird, try to record any of the above -and take a notebook with you as this will help. Then match your observations with a good reference book to co-relate what you saw with the correct species.
Remember that in many species males and females markedly differ in plumage (females duller than males) and also juveniles can be atypical in the way they appear. Also plumage in some birds change winter to summer and vice versa.

Take note of the distinguishing characteristics of the bird you are wanting to identify. As in, shape, size, shape of beak, colour, and any markings or other characteristics that stand out to you, as well as where the bird is located. Or, if you can draw, make a quick sketch of the bird while watching him. Then find a good field guide to birds in your area, and find the bird.
