We just got two new parakeets just last night and I noticed a bald spot on th back of the female parakeet's head. I know that they can loose feathers out of stress. They are a male and female mates. My husband bought them while he was in the different part of the country and since he was nervious about bringing them home on a plane so we waited for a month and a half for someone to bring them up. The travel was 8 hours long or more. By the time that they reached our house the female was so exhausted, it looked like she was going to fall off the perch. They are both a year old. My concern is with the bald spot on the female's back of the head. They are still adjusting and I'm talking to them and playing music for them and they are really improving. The female is perfectly healthy despite the bald spot. What could be the problem that she has that bald spot? Could it just be stress from the travelling? I haven't seen her peck at herself or ripping feathers off of herself.

Hi, I just got a parakeet an have been reading about them. My parakeet is somewhat quiet, and I read somewhere that this is not good, a quiet parakeet is not a happy one. He chirps here and there and just started. He doesn't play with his toys. He has bells, mirrors, they are colorful. any idea what other types of toys he may enjoy? And what about treats?? How can I make him happier and perhaps he is content?? Any advice would be great. I spend time with him every day. He appears ok, he is just quieter than I expected, a lot quiter than my cockatiel I had years ago. I am wondering, maybe he needs a mate? I don't know, i just want him to be a happy bird. Is he?? Please help!!

We had a visit from the fox on Sat night, she broke through the duck house and took my only female duck leaving 3 males very shaken. I have bought them inside and dealt with shock in the normal way and they all seem physically ok except for small grazes and one with a sore but no obvious injury to a leg. They all seem really depressed and are not eating , I've tried giving them porridge (they like that normally) but they are still not really eating , just picking.Would appreciate some ideas from others, I have been keeping duck for 8 years with the oldest I have now being 8 and would hate to lose them .

How often should I or can I open the box to check on my baby cockatiels? They are 3 weeks old now. So far I've done it a few times everyday. Can I also take them out everytime or is it ok to do it once a day as I've done so far.

The chicken or the egg

When I checked on the babies this morning I noticed that the oldest ones tip of wing had something stuck to it. When I tried to remove it I saw that 2 feather tips were broken and it blead a bit. What happened? They are in the breeding box so I cant see whats happening inside. Do you think one of the younger ones bit it or did the parents bite it? The parents still feeds it so would they bite it? Every other day I will take the babies out for a minute or so to check them. The parents are used to me, but they don't let me touch them or hold them. I only have them 2 years and I don't know if this is tame or not. The oldest ones right foot also seems a little disabled. Only one foot holds my finger tight the other foots two outside fingers curl slightly inwards. What's wrong with the foot? I need serious suggestions as I can't find proper help in Taiwan.

Our love birds just had babies and we know that we will soon have to start hand feeding. At what age should we start and how many times per day? This is the first time we have had baby birds so this is all new to us. We have 3 babies so far and 3 unhatched egg.

I have had my male cockatiel for the last four years. In the last year he has taken a liking to our computer mouse and we just thought it was a cute little phase. He would go over to the mouse and chirp at it, put his foot on it, and lightly peck on it as if to woo the mouse.

Recently (the past two days) he has become hostile and vicious whenever someone tries to use the mouse for the computer. He is drawing blood when he bites our fingers! The only way we can get him to stop is to lock him up in the cage and put a towel over the cage (if we just put him in there he starts to freak out and run around in circles).

Is this normal? What can we do to stop this behavior? It is REALLY weird and I don't know what to do. Any help is appreciated.

I got him about 6 months ago and he is fairly tame. He sits on my hand but doesnt come out from the cage. I have started a job now where I only see him a few hours a day (1-2). I was wondering if I can get a female for him as company? He is in a big cockatoos gage so room isn't a problem. He seems to be going crazy from lonelyness!?? is that possible?

I just got two parakeets and all is well but i really wanna know what their gender is. When I first when to the pet store the lady said in a few months I have to take it to the vet and ask a pro but the second time a went a couple hours later a different guy guessed on what it would be so I think there might be a way to tell. Does anyone one know how to tell the gender??

I've had him for a bout 6 months now, and he is still attacking me like I just got him.
He hisses if I get near him, and bites me if I go to touch him. I've tried just talking to him and him getting use to me, but it doesn't work. And I've tried letting him eat out of my hand, but he just bites me, and his bites really hurt.
Is there anything I can do to get him to like me and let me pet and hold him?
