I got him about 6 months ago and he is fairly tame. He sits on my hand but doesnt come out from the cage. I have started a job now where I only see him a few hours a day (1-2). I was wondering if I can get a female for him as company? He is in a big cockatoos gage so room isn't a problem. He seems to be going crazy from lonelyness!?? is that possible?

a mate is definitely a good idea. parakeets are extremely sociable and need company, especially since you are working now. it is possible that they will mate, so consider that in your buying a companion. if it is a male, it is fine to get another male. any sex would fight with another at first. if you don't mind the possibility of having eggs, i would buy a female.

i know this is off topic but he should not be in a cockatoos cage the bars are to big he can try to escape and get stuck but my advice to you is no if you can't get him out of the cage you need to get him out of the cage and fully bonded as for a female bird a female bird can't be a "friend" they either are mates or hate each other

Parakeets do relish the organization of different birds. She would in all probability relish having a chum extra advantageous than being on my own. She would maximum in all probability bond extra to you, considering which you're each and all of the psychological stimulation she has. She ought to ok like the cage to herself however. All birds are distinctive, you ought to in all probability in basic terms watch her for a mutually as and notice how she adjusts. If she looks depressed or bored, get her a chum.

yes, he sounds a bit lonely...i'd get a female like you thought....
try to pay attention to them more often as they are gregarious birds and love attention just like any other tamable bird....
we have a green cheek conure-she's is a parrot, yet small like a parakeet (slightly larger). and we have a goffin cockatoo.
even though bartles got enough attention from his humans, we got another bird because we have time for another bird.

you need to interact more with the one you have-then once he trusts you, bring the next bird in-but ONLY if you have time.
many birds become orphans because folks don't realize how much time is needed to properly care for a bird! (that is how we adopted "boo-boo")

whenever we leave the house, we make sure each bird has their favorite toys, fresh water, food and we always leave the radio on for them.

good luck!

If you get him a friend, he will most likely apprecite it if you introduce them slowely. Put the female in a cage next to him to get him used to her. Then put him in her cage, then put them both in the main cage. Note: by getting a friend your budgie might get less friendly to you!

definately get him a friend. if you get a female be prepared for eggs and babies. we had a couple that had babies without a nesting box. they generally do not become less friendly to you but they may want to spend more time together.
