I hope that you will not try to keep one chicken on its own. This would be very unfair as the bird would be really unhappy. Chickens also dig up plants - I know I have 13 chickens and 3 cockerels - so I don't know how your dad would take that.
Chickens are a big responsibility. You have to make sure that they are locked up at dusk or earlier in a secure fox and badger proof home. This means doing this every day whatever the weather and whether you feel like it or not. If you are really prepared for all the responsibility - and remember chickens can live to be quite old, several of mine are over 5 years old, then I suggest you consider taking them from the battery hen welfare trust. These are birds that have had terrible lives producing battery eggs. They have lived in tiny cages in sheds all their lives. They look terrible when you first get them but, with love and care, become really happy birds. There is a website where you can find out more - if you google the name you'll find it. Chickens don't usually know there own names so, although all mine have names when I want them to come to me I just shout "chickens" and they all come running over. Please think carefully before you take on chickens. These birds get a really rough deal from humans so only have them if you can offer a special home.

You need 2 or 3 names! You can't keep one chicken, they go nuts on their own - get 3 then they'll be company for each other and if one dies theres 2 left. You're Dads going to get a good source of manure for his allotment and you'll get eggs for the house too.
Your Dad can grow a lot of their feed too. Fresh greens in their diet make more vitamins in the eggs, plus it makes the yolks a good colour.
They make pretty interesting pets - I used to breed them! Did you know you can get fancy breeds? There's loads of different breeds.
Theres also a lot of websites, have a look around.

http://www.smallholder.co.uk/ The Smallholder mag is a good source of info.

Its best to wait til you figure out your hens personalities before you name them. Some are bossy, some are shy.

There's lots to learn before you even think about getting chickens. I have a website called www.allaboutchickens.tk with lots of information on keeping chickens, and if you click on chicken names then there is a list of about 600 names.

I also recommend www.backyardchickens.com and particularly the forum. Without it I never would have started keeping chickens!

just be a aware that tou will need more than one, they like to live with others. also chickens like to dig up seeds and eat plants, so maybe not so good for an allotment. i would do some more research before you get them, or they may have to go in the pot instead of the veg your dad used to grow.

Call it whatever you like but you will need a concrete floored and fox proof shed for it and 2 or 3 more as company as they are social.

well we called one of our chickens henny penny. some others we named after fruit like pineapple, grapefruit, lemon, melon and kiwi. kinda cute! and one of them is named goofy. one is called hop-along and skip both because she has a limp!! just go for a name you like, that is easy to remember. and maybe something unique, or something that kinda describes your chicken....have fun!!

well my mum had a blue wyandotte and a black wyandotte and i called them 'wywychickenpie' and 'wywychickendinner'! and they would come when you called 'chickenpie' and 'chickendinner' they were great but they turned out to be males and they were returned to their breeder as they started crowing non stop! so she got two proven 'layers' indian game hens but they were wild and never received names but were just called 'chook-chook' when called!

Why not call it "Duckie"? That should confuse it! Besides, it's not going to answer you back. But if it does, I'll be its manager. lol
