Chances are it is a male, right now we are entering into their mating season. The problem with birds are when they see a window, they don't see what you and I see. A window to a bird is a reflection or a big mirror. The cardinal is actually seeing a reflection of himself and he is threatening it so it will get out of his territory. When you get closer you break up the reflection and the bird leaves. What you can do is hang something that moves i.e. ribbons, wind sock, etc. to break up the reflection from the outside. It will also scare the bird away from the window.

I would suggest putting X with masking tape on you window that way it dose not look like a through way for the bird. You must have very clean windows.Put the X in a few different spots on the window. Hopefully the bird will take the hint that this is not a place to get into and masking tape is easy to remove.

Put some type of window sticker on the window so it is not invisible to the bird so he stops running into it.

You can also get some of those little stained glass pictures that hang by a suction cup. They are prettier than masking tape. lol You can pick them up at most of the hobby stores. They even have ones that you can make yourself.

Goodluck!
