All animals have personalities. A hand-raised bird (a Conure, say) can be as loving and engaging a companion as a dog or cat; plus, many varieties can live much, much longer than a dog or cat, and even outlive you!
It's an acquired taste, though, and requires work; whereas cats are ambivalent and most people accept it, and dogs are eager-to-please even if you abuse them, birds are both eager to please and highly sensitive. So you have to put in more work, and learn a lot more, and be more engaged -- but you'll have a much more unique and interesting pet as a result. Not everyone's cup of tea.
Having said that: if you're talking more the parakeet variety, most people have birds like that because they enjoy the atmosphere and having a pet they can keep in a cage (and so doesn't need walks and won't tear up the furniture.) A lower-order bird like a parakeet is a very low-maintenance way to bring a little life into your home.

I've had a bird, dunno wat species but was rescued by my dad yrs ago, probably fell from a nest nearby. Bcos it was a chick back then, I only put her in a cage at nite so the cats won't get to her, and practically lived her life outside the cage. She'd be near the kitchen when my mum was cooking and everyday my mum would talk to her while cooking and within a few months learnt to talk. She'll play with the kids n fly around the trees and jungle nearby when she feels like it. Birds won't protect ur home for u, but they do offer some sort of small companionship, just like cats and any other animals do, but do try not to keep them in cages too much, they turn dumb and it's pretty cruel too.

Birds can bring a sound to a dreary day, as in the middle of winter,or a long rainy spell. They also have brought me out of a state of depression, and cases of S.A.D. That is what they can be good for.

not every1 likes cats or dogs some people find them more companiable, they are more unusual and some can talk. each to there own i guess. it would be boring if every1 had the same animal and the exact same breed. different people have pets for different reasons. one person might have a cat to catch mice whereas someone might have a rabbit cos they r good to cuddle lol

A cat and dog live about ten years. A parrot or cockatoo can live a hundred years. They are a lifetime committment.

Birds are great, but can be trying. I think its the challenge they give us.You can train them but they are always 1 step removed from their wild ancestors.

Some parrots and macaws can carry on a conversation with you. They learn from what you say and copy you. So, might depend on how much you know.

I asked my African Grey this question and I'd tell you what he said in response, but the censors would just turn it into a bunch of ********'s
Suffice to say that his answer was more intelligent than the question, :-)
