I have had my male cockatiel for the last four years. In the last year he has taken a liking to our computer mouse and we just thought it was a cute little phase. He would go over to the mouse and chirp at it, put his foot on it, and lightly peck on it as if to woo the mouse.

Recently (the past two days) he has become hostile and vicious whenever someone tries to use the mouse for the computer. He is drawing blood when he bites our fingers! The only way we can get him to stop is to lock him up in the cage and put a towel over the cage (if we just put him in there he starts to freak out and run around in circles).

Is this normal? What can we do to stop this behavior? It is REALLY weird and I don't know what to do. Any help is appreciated.

He has found a toy he is extremely attached to. He is protecting it because its 'his'. Or so he thinks. You need to let him know that it is your computer mouse, not his. when he tries to get near it, shoo him away. if he does not give in, I would try to keep the mouse out of sight from him... my cockatiel has an obsession with t.v. remote controls and gets very vicious when we try to take them away. Preventing it is the only way to stop it, besides making sure he knows its yours!

has he got enough toys? maybe buy him some more toys maybe something like a mouse.when you take him out of the cage take his toy. just try and keep him away from the mouse but make sure he has another toy with him when he is out of the cage.
he might be "in love" with the mouse so more toys more stuff tokeep him away from the mouse should help.

good luck..

catch :)

Look, I have a lutino cockatiel.. so I know how you feel.
They are very curious and are attracted to bright and colorful things..as well as they love biting cables and wood.. that's something normal. However, you should buy some toy or calcium to it because they need to bite that big white calcium thingy in order to make their body stronger and protect its pike (i think that's how its mouth is called in English, isnt it?) .

it sounds like he is bonded to it and protecting it like he would a mate. maybe he needs a companion. i'd try getting him another bird or a mirror so that he can bond to it instead of your mouse.
