It's called "looking at the bird". One can determine species in accordance with physical characteristics.

Take note of the distinguishing characteristics of the bird you are wanting to identify. As in, shape, size, shape of beak, colour, and any markings or other characteristics that stand out to you, as well as where the bird is located. Or, if you can draw, make a quick sketch of the bird while watching him. Then find a good field guide to birds in your area, and find the bird.

In our country, it's called "Bird Watching".

We watch for a bird, using binoculars, and then when we see an interesting bird, often we will carry with us what is called a "Field Guide" which is an encyclopedia of species of birds which inhabit the area we are bird watching in.

When we see our bird, we verify that it is that species.

Other ways are by banding and microchipping...those are forms of "identification", not "verification".
Good luck
