Hi there, if you are sure that your new canary is a female, I would keep them apart for a week, in the same room obviously, and when you do put them in together, put HIM in HER cage. Rearrange it with the perches etc. in different positions than they are in his cage, and go from there, they should be fine. He is being territorial of his cage. He could also be overly eager to mate, and I would also consider putting in a pine or cedar branch, just to give her a bit of time to conceal herself. With the cage rearranged differently, he has that to get used to that also. I would also suggest that if you want them to breed and raise young ones for you, that you give them a proper canary nest as well, but wait for 1 month, let them get to know each other, their curiosity for the nest will be piqued, and it will be something they want to explore. If it is already in there, they may not bother with it at all. You may even want to put in two nests to give variety so they can choose. If you bought her in the interest of just making him sing, then definitely keep them in seperate cages, and he will sing a lot more to try to attract her. Best of luck. Be sure that she is a female though, or they may kill each other. To breed your birds, they should be in good feather, they should be one year old at least, and they need eggfood, look for it at a pet supply store. They tend to naturally breed and raise babies with longer days. It is the light, so 14-16 hours of daylight is the best time, unless you want to fool them with artificial light. Their feathers should be at their best, and your birds in top condition...good diet, etc.

Males are notoriously and instinctively aggressive toward any bird invading their territory, whether it be female or male until they "know" that bird.

It would have been better to put her in a cage next to his for about 24 hours, first, and to let them get to know each other a bit...then to have introduced them, however what's done is done.

It will pass and he will become enamoured eventually.:)

Good luck

The cage was the males established territory. It's safer and less stressful if you put them in cages in the same room then gradually move them closer then after they start interacting and are friendly put them together.
How would you like it if some stranger were shoved in your room one night?

Perhaps she is a 'he'. Male canaries are very territorial and if you put two males together expect flying feathers.

He may feel that the cage is his, I would try putting both togother in a different cage and see if that works.

If canaries are anything like humans, he'll probably *****-slap her a few times before they get it on.

you need two cages to put them side by side and only put them together until they start to fight because they need to get to know each other
