My friend has a canary and he takes them into his basement to clean out their cages. Everytime he does this the canary falls to the bottom of the cage with his beak wide open. My friend quickly brings the bird back upstairs and the bird recovers quickly. What could be causing this to happen in my friend's basement?

I'm thinking of buying one, but I'm researching it first. Anyway, I'm wondering about a few things:

1) I read about teflon being fatal to them. We have a frying pan in our kitchen I think- can we still use it if I close the door to the room with the bird? I don't think the household will be happy about getting rid of kitchenware. Also- I have a space heater. I read something about chemicals on some of those too. Are those ok? I frequently use it to heat up my room.

2) Are parakeets very expensive to take care of? I thought that they weren't too bad...food, toys, and some necessities, but I read somewhere that they are expensive. Do avian vets charge a lot for a visit?

3) Question about how much time you need to spend with them. I read they shouldn't be in a cage for more than 8 hours- but I leave at say, 9 AM, and don't get home until around 6 PM. Some days (college days) I'll get home at 9 or 10 PM. I do plan on spending at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours of time with it per day,

Phars, a 3 year old cockatiel, whos a cheerful , heathly, compainion bird likes takes a bath everyday. I'll spray him with the mist. I'll put him ontop of his cage and spray in one area, then wait, and he'll run over to the spot, and I'll keep on spraying him untill he moves away. He puts his wings in the air a fluffs himself out, spreades his tail out, and moves around as if he's danceing. After about the 4th bottle refill, he'll normally move away. He's quite a beauty king and spends most of his time either preening, whistleing to himself at the mirror, talking to me, or trying to find a new way to keep his toys in a organized fasion, such as putting the play balls in one corner, or trying to get all the strings put back together. I reaggrange/switch the toys out about every week, always trying to find some way to make him happy. He gets two hours of playing atop his cage everyday. My question is, how much should I be spraying him(bottles)? He dosen't like takeing baths in the sink...

We're cheap and don't like the heat to stay on too long.

I suggested a heating fan to the lady at petsmart but she said that was a bad idea.

I have read that you should feed your finches fruits and veggies and eggs, do you feed them all three things everyday or 1 of each thing on different days? And what kind of fruits and veggies do they prefer?

Stumpy the four-legged duckling is basking in the spotlight after being unveiled to the world. The bird, now just eight days old, has suffered a rare genetic mutation which has left it with two legs behind the two he runs about on. Stumpy would not survive in the wild, but owner Nicky Janaway, who runs the Warrawee Duck Farm in the New Forest, Hampshire, is making sure he will do the best he can.

"He's eating and surviving so far and he is running about with those extra legs acting like stabilisers," Mrs Janaway said.

"He's had so much attention he is having a power nap at the moment because he's exhausted but we will making sure he's OK and hopefully he will carry on and survive.

Mrs Janaway said she was gobsmacked when he turned Stumpy over to find out his sex and was confronted by all those legs.

"It was absolutely bizarre. I was thinking `he's got too many legs' and I kept counting `1,2,3,4'."
