I would never recommend getting a pet from a pet store. A responsible and reputable breeder is always your best option. A breeder will know the history of the bird that you are inquiring about. They can tell you what personality a potential new bird has, if it is used to being housed with other birds and young, it will adapt easier to your bird. If you buy from a pet store, age is really hard to verify, and health is another factor. Two male budgies can be the best of companions, female birds can get hormonal wanting to nest when they reach sexual maturity, and can get quite abusive and frustrated with another bird. If you are wanting to breed budgies, I would suggest a hen that is of breeding age, and providing a proper nest after you have introduced the pair and let them bond...about 2 months later for a nest. If you only seek companionship for your bird, a male will suffice. The other option is to not get another bird, but to get some new toys, or take the opportunity to bond with your bird and hand tame him, allow him some out of cage time. Budgies are very sociable, so maybe you could be his new best friend.

Female. Two males would probably not get along well. Even with a female, parrots and parakeets don't always become friends. When you bring the new one home, keep them apart for a couple days, with their cages side by side, and them put them together, if you see they like each other. If they are hostile, you may need to arrange with the pet shop to return the new one if they are not getting along.

im sorry to hear that i recently lost a male budgie last week.........it is best to get a female, if you want to breed them, if not get a male but you have to be careful in case they fight, if the start to fight keep them in separate cages and slowly move them nearer each other so they don't fight each other then when you think they are ready to live together move them into the same cage, that way they may not be as angry about each other
i'm so sorry for your loss
good luck:-)
