Generally speaking by sight both sexes look alike. However males tend to be slightly larger and heavier, so if you see a pair the larger one is probably the male. Odds of actually seeing which one lays the eggs is remote, and relying on which parent is incubating isn't reliable in this species since both male and female will incubate the eggs and raise the young. To add to the confusion sometimes there's cooperative breeding,where a bird from a previous brood will help raise the young or multiple females will lay in the same nest.
