My tank is still cycling as its only been with fish for about 3 weeks. I have 4 african cichlids and an aglae eater.
My ammonia levels are going down and my nitrites are peaking which I know is normal. But they are REALLY high and Im worried about my fish. How long will it take for these harmful nitrites to turn into nitrates?
My levels are 0 ammonia, about 5.0 in nitrites and about 40 in nitrates.
I know it should be soon since the nitrates are high as well, but how long until my nitrites go down? I was advised to not do a water change until the cycle is completed. Please help before I lose my fish! Thanks!

Ok, my sisters fish is having problems this time. It keeps thrashing around the tank, then floating to the bottom, and swimming up to the top. It also keeps floating on its side and upside down. Is it dying, or does it have parasites or something? Any tips?

I noticed a bunch of mickey platy fry hiding out in a tall hornwort plant I have in my 28 gallon aquarium. Apparently, one or more of those 5 mickey platies I have is a very fertile female.

So the question is, what do I do now? I don't want the parents to eat their young. I already bought one of those breeder nets to protect the fry with. And my ten gallon tank is already filled with the dwarf puffers I recently transferred from the 28 gallon tank. So that option is out.

Do you think if I keep the parents' well fed every day (not overfeeding though) they won't eat their young or try to?

But what do I feed the fry babies? Flake food?

I must say I'm surprised the mickey platies gave birth. I know they are live bearers but doesn't the water temp have to be above 80 degrees for that to happen? I have the water temp. set at 79 degrees.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

.. I had an empty tank for 2 weeks and have had 4 platys in for 5 days now, and they are doing really well - I've done two water tests, and all results the same as before I added the fish.

I have two questions... I'm planning a 10% water change and gravel clean on Wednesday - but do I also wipe down the inside of the glass?? I want to get an Oto catfish eventually, so do I leave what's on the glass for when he arrives? Or do you have to clean the glass every time you do a water cfhange, catfish or not??

Also, for my next fish I want to get one male Betta - how long before I can get him? Do I have to now wait until my tank has cycled, or can I get him within the next week??

We had a male betta for months so when we got a large aquarium I bought alot of new fish (guppies, a female betta, ghost shrimps, little frogs, & a sucker fish --- 28 total). Right away, after puting the fish together, some got body fungus and half died within 1 day. I treated the tank for 5 days for body fungus, gill disease, mouth & tail rot disease, and popeye disease... it was not the cheapest stuff. Within a day of body fungus clear-up my fish got gill disease. How? I have no idea since they showed no signs before and I used a combo treatment that covered it too. My tank has been continued on treatment now almost 10 days and still more fish dying (I have flushed 11 in days)! Right now it is still gill disease (red, swollen gills, listless fish, & trouble breathing). If I stop treatment just 1 day more die, if not then no change in health. What do I do? Water sample taken to petsmart said water o.k. & treatment should of worked. I have done as directed on treatment box.

My light on my fish tank just turns off by itself I can turn it back on but it's a pain in the but. Do I just need to replace the bulb or do I need to replace the whole hood? I would assume that if it's the bulb it would just go out and not turn on again but I don't know if fluorescent tube lights are different. Thank you for your help.

I have a 10 gallon tank with a calico fantail, a golden fantail, a small algae eater, another fantail, and a guppy. When I first bought my golden fantail about 3 months ago, s/he was big, but as the days have gone on, s/he has gotten much bigger...and I don't mean lengthwise. I mean fatter. The calico has also begun to become rather large. Is this normal? They eat and swim like usual, so there's no change in behavior. Also, on the back of the golden fantail near its tail, there seems to be a little red spot under his/her scales...almost like a bruise on a human. Any advice or help would be appreciated!
