It's just a minor preventative, meant to help heal minor wounds, and more importantly, prevent infection. It won't heal fungus or fin rot or pop-eye or any other real diseases, and the pimafix the other poster used would have worked equally well without melafix in the tank. It is said to be a minor anti-bacterial, but if it isn't strong enough to kill the good bacteria in your tank, what makes it strong enough to kill the bad?

If your fish has suffered a minor flesh wound then melafix can help. I don't recommend adding anything to the water if nothing is wrong - it only complicates things. All fish really need, despite what the fish store tries to sell you, is fresh, clean water from a well maintained tank.

melafix isn't a medication -- think of it more like an antibacterial body wash for your fish. if your fish has a bacterial infection it is usually better to do a water change and think about using antibiotics.

Yes!!! Especially if you use it with pimafix. I had a bronze cory with a major body fungus problem. All that was free of fungus on him was his tail and head, everything else was covered. :( I had a major hassle trying to find meds for scaleless species. With in two weeks, he was fully recovered and his fins stared to grow back. It doesn't smell bad, but can really clog and mess up your tank. So be sure to use a hospital tank. It plugs up filters and gives all the decorations a nice slimy brown layer. You can get them at Walmart for pretty cheap. I dont know how great it is without pimafix, but with it can save a fishies life!!!!

I agree with G, it's not a mediction. It might be good for some minor disease prevention, but will not treat a disease.
