I noticed a bunch of mickey platy fry hiding out in a tall hornwort plant I have in my 28 gallon aquarium. Apparently, one or more of those 5 mickey platies I have is a very fertile female.

So the question is, what do I do now? I don't want the parents to eat their young. I already bought one of those breeder nets to protect the fry with. And my ten gallon tank is already filled with the dwarf puffers I recently transferred from the 28 gallon tank. So that option is out.

Do you think if I keep the parents' well fed every day (not overfeeding though) they won't eat their young or try to?

But what do I feed the fry babies? Flake food?

I must say I'm surprised the mickey platies gave birth. I know they are live bearers but doesn't the water temp have to be above 80 degrees for that to happen? I have the water temp. set at 79 degrees.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

By the special fry food for your fry, you can get it at petcos, petsmart and other fish stores
If you have pregant platies, put them in the breeder
Purchase a second breeder to put the fry in, this way you ensure that they don't get eaten.

The Fry food is called "First Bites" and is a powder

you can go and look for some liquid fry food-they can be a bit difficult to raise up.THe net breeding boxes are not really a good idea. You can use one if you don't have any other options, but the best thing to do is have a seperate tank for the mom to have the babies in. She will feel safer and the babies will be much safer. A small tank, like a 5 gallon would be perfect. Just be sure to add lots and lots of hiding places, unless you are more of the survival of the fitest kind of person.

You can use knitting yard to make great hiding places for babies. Wrap the yard around a large book about 20 times and tie another piece around the bundle at the bottom. Then cut the strands across the top and you have a little bundle of strands. Boil this to get the dye out and to soften it up before you add it to the tank. You can tie it to a piece of styrofoam to make it float or to something heavuy and safe for a tank to make it sink. Make several and add them to your baby tank and they will be much safer.
I personally think just raising them up seperately long enough for them to get a little bigger to rejoin the rest is enough of survival of the fitest. I think they just deserve more of a chance. I found a link another persons personal experience with them though..thought you might want to check it out.

The only ways I know of for sure to prevent them from being eaten is to either give them lots of hiding places by adding plants and stuff, or to use the breeding net. Otherwise you could probably try just buying something like a goldfish bowl and putting the fry in there. As for what they eat, the fry will eat any finley ground fish food.

Hope I helped! good luck!

with enough hiding places a few of the fry usually survive. this isn't a bad thing -- there isn't much you can do with all those fry anyway except overcrowd your tanks or give them away on craigslist. you can get liquid food at the petstore for fry and from there work up to fry food -- its kind of what you would get if you put your regular fish food in the blender.

More then likely if you do not get them out they will become lunch, no matter how good the mom and dad is they will still eat them. any any other fish you have in there will eat them also!
There is some kind of food you can get frozen at your pet store, but I for got the name of it, I am thanking it is a type of worm.
If you have a falter in your tank, then your new babies can get sucked up in there falter! so if you have one at least stop it! There is some things now you can get at the pet store that goes over you falter to keep this form happening! Good Luck
