My light on my fish tank just turns off by itself I can turn it back on but it's a pain in the but. Do I just need to replace the bulb or do I need to replace the whole hood? I would assume that if it's the bulb it would just go out and not turn on again but I don't know if fluorescent tube lights are different. Thank you for your help.

So I guess what I want to know is when a fluorescent tube light is going out will if just slowly start to fail or does it go out like a normal light bulb.Thank you for your help.

Maybe your fish are doing it when you're not looking.

Did you know that they should have dark at night? They have a body/light sensitivity like we do and actually live better when they can rest at night.

How long have you had the light? Really the problem could be a number of things.

Are the ends of the fluorescent tube darker in color and is it something that you've used for several months? It might just be the tube needs to be replaced. This is particularly true if you run the light for more than 12 hrs a day.

Is water able to get to the light? The ends of the tube and the endcaps might be corroded. If the "prongs" on the ends of the tubes look mottled and dull when you take the tube out, this might be the problem. I'd a good idea to use a glass cover so water stays off the light.

You might also have a ballast going bad.

You can try replacing the tube if it's been used for more than 6-9 months and see if that's the probem. If not, and you have a lighting repair shop near where you live, you might want to have them diagnose the problem.

faulty switch perhaps? you could try changing the tube itself. just bring your current tube to the shop for comparison so you wont get a wrong tube
