how do u tell the difference between male and female fish?

That really depends on the type of fish. In livebearers, there's a difference in the shape of the anal fin. In some species they are different colors or have different markings. Sometimes they are different sizes, but depending on the species, one gender or the other might be the larger one. In some species (like goldfish) the males get pimple-like bumps on their gill covers and front edges of their fins, but this only happens when their about to spawn - other times of the year, they resemble females.

Generally speaking, the females are a little broader than the males, at least as adults because of the eggs.

Not always but alot of the time the males are really pretty, long fins and the females are just boring looking, bla, and sometimes even ugly

The real truth is that you need to find out on each individual species. Sometimes there are size differences, sometimes fins will be shaped differently, and sometimes color can be completely different. Sometimes its nearly impossible to tell even as adults.
