Your tank is not cycled? Here is a link so you can understand what cycling a tank means for your fish and what to expect;

Also, when getting home with new fish you need to float them. This is done by placing the bags as is from the pet store directly into the top of your tank. Allow them to float for about 15-20 minutes. After that time open the bag and pour in 1/2 cup or so of your aquarium water and let them float for another 15-20 minutes. add another 1/2 cup of your tank water and let them sit again. Do this 5-6 times and release. This will allow your fish to acclimate slowly to the water in your tank as well as the PH.
Letting tap water sit for a day does not remove the chlorene or the chlormates from it. you need a good water conditioner / dechlor. Your filters should also be on and running.
Please read about the cycling so you will know what to expect in the weeks to come.

If the aquarium is new also then i would let the water set. If not just set the bag with the goldfish in the aquarium to let the fish get use to the water then you can let them out of the bag and into the aquarium.

24 hours is overkill for adjusting to temp. 20-30 minutes will do fine. That of course is assuming that your tank is set up to ideal conditions with correct temps, pre-treated for chlorine, etc. That being said goldfish are very hardy fish and adapt well to less than stellar conditions.
Just remember that goldfish are incredibly dirty so they require much more space per fish than your average tropical fish so ensure that you have a tank large enough to accomadate the bio-load of several goldfish
Good Luck

Don't put them in the aquarium directly yet; First you have to keep them in the bag, and place the bag in the water, so they can get used to the temperature. After about a day, you can take them out of the bag and put them all the way in the aquarium.

If you are using tap water, let the water sit uncovered at least 24 hrs. If the fish are in a bag ...put the bag (with fish still in it) in the new water to let the fish get used to the new water temperature. After the 24 hrs. empty fish in new water.

if they're in a bag, keep them in the bag and put the bag in the water for 15 to 30 minutes for the bag to acclimatize to the water in the aquarium. DONT keep them in the bag for a whole day.that's just dumb. they'll get hungry and might die.

You should make sure there is no chlorine in the water by letting it sit for a couple of days or even better, treating it with a chlorine removing chemical available at your pet store.

you just need to float the bag in the aquarium until it comes to the same temp.
