Fish - March 2007

I just got this fish yesterday.. felt really bad for him.

The problems:

1.) His "coat" isn't shiny or bright or anything, it's a really dull almost like it could be seethrough. I've looked at a ton of pictures of fish like him, and couldn't find one that looks remotely like he does.

2.) A few of his scales are uprooted. Poking out I suppose. Only about 6-7. The tanks he was kept in only had rocks in it, and he was by himself, so I'm hoping this won't be the cause of some disease.

3.) He's got a black splotch around his eye, like if you would drop some sort of black dye into water, it gets swirlyish? Not a normal marking, and I can't figure out what it is, there's also something sticking out of his head by the splotch that is also black, but I can't really make it out.

4.) He has an open sore on his gill that I'm treating with Melafix, but he doesn't show any signs of gasping.. so I think he might be okay in that regard.

Any ideas of what might be wrong and how to fix?

I have two guppy-related questions:
1. We put a plant floating on top of the water, just in case one of the fish had babies and needed somewhere to hide, and one of my female guppies seems to like it there. lol She's staying in it, just swimming in place. Does she do this just because she feels safer from the other guppies? (There are four other fish with her, only one of them is a female.) Or is she ready to have her babies?? She is pregnant, but she isn't very big yet. Could it be just a really small batch of fry?
2. One of my male guppies looks bloated. Atlantis (that's his name) is even bigger than both of my pregnant guppies! Sometimes he swims really slowly near the bottom of the tank, and he doesn't really look too good..he's kind of pale, and has two red lines near the top of his sides that I don't think were there before. We got him pretty recently, so it's not because he's old.
Can anyone tell me what's up with my gups?

I have a 20 gallon tank. I want to know what you need to set it up. Also I want to know what fish get along with each other. I don't want Tropical Fish. I want to have that one fish that you always see on the glass sucking the algae. What fish get along with that? Do you have a 20 gallon aquarium at home and if you do what fish do you have and what equipment do you have.

I have 3 small fancy goldfish and an algea eater which may be outgrowing their tank. These fish were a gift a month ago and from what i've been reading it takes some time to establish a tank (something about bacteria). So what would be the best way to set up a new 10gl tank and move them in there without having them get stressed or sick?

Hardy and showy ones. Hopefully a few species, (one species a school of them, and 1-2 species that can be "loners")

I asked this question a few days ago but now I wanted to see who thinks a goldfish has a memory of 3 seconds or not. If not what? It would help if there were some links.

I have an 18 gallon tank with:
~ 2 algae eaters
~ 2 harlequin rasboras
~ 2 neon tetras
~ 3 glowlight tetras
~ 3 guppies, 2 female and 1 male
~ 2 sunset dwarf platies

My fish keep on dying though. So far 3 died. The sunset platy died because of its tail was bitten off then turned white, the neon tetra had a clear line in the middle and I think that was how it died probably I'm not sure, and I don't know how the rasbora died. I think it was one of the other fish, but I'm not sure which one though. It was pretty small when I found it dead.... Please help!

I have a ten gallon fish tank, and the decorations that we had put in there are turing orange. I have live plants, fake plants, a large crystal with the matrix still attached, and a small broken "Roman" style column. Almost all of the crystal and the column are covered with this orange stuff. What is it?

BTW everyone goldfish cannot live in a bowl. The companies responsible for selling these get ups should be notified of the inhumane practice. The goldfish bowl myth has got to end.

I have a pump that sits about an inch over the top of the water and it runs down into the water creating air bubbles for the fish. Is it ok to turn the pump off at night? My 5 year old says the water splashing sound bothers her at night.
