it all depends on what kind of goldfish and how you take care of it. I bought a goldfish for my mom and dad's daycare as a sort of mascot for them and it lived for 4 years but, some people are able to kill their goldfish in less then a day. If you are interested in buying one for yourself or anyone else I would consider purchasing a tank to go with it not a bowl. It doesn't have to be very large but a good size would be a 5 gallon tank with some kind of filter because goldfish are one of the dirtiest fish around. You don't need a heater becaus ethey can live in water that ranges from 55 degrees to 70 degrees.

Average life span I think is a month. Most people kill them off with bad tank maintenance. There are a lot of myths when it comes to goldfish. The first is that they can live in a bowl. Another is they are a beginner fish and are very easy to keep. They actually need more water changes than most aquarium fish. But if you know how to keep them, common goldfish can live into their 40's. Koi even longer. Fancy gf up to 15 years.

the max is 40 years, that's how long one lived in a Chinese pond. I guess the pond fish live longer while tank fish live a shorter life, i've had one fan tail for 5 years now, but all the others died when I moved and many more died a few days to months after i purchased them. I hear they average about 8 to 10 years, but moving to a different location with different water hardness and quality can kill them off

I don't know what is normal or not, but I had won a goldfish at a carnival when I was 15 and the little guy lived until I was 26. Any other goldfish I ever had never lived longer than a few months.

Believe it or not, goldfish can live anywhere from 7-10 years or sometimes more! That is if you care for them properly. We have had our goldfish (part fantail/vailtail) for 8 years and he's still going strong! All we do is clean out his 5 gallon tank once a month and while we do that he stays in a smaller tank. We also maintain his water with salt and chemicals that reduces chlorine! He has a filter/fountain that keeps his tank fresh along with air stones.

I had one for more than 7 years. I suppose I am not the world record holder, so they should live more than 10 years. But most of them die earlier.

In their natural environment, they can live for close to 50 years. They can easily live for 25+ years in a backyard pond.

In a home aquarium, 10-15 years is not uncommon at all.
