How many times do I have to wash it? (e.g. once a week, once a month etc...)

Actually, I don't think you can "wash" water. What you are actually doing is replacing water. The general rule of thumb is to change 25% once a week. You siphon out old water, vacuuming the bottom of waste and then replace it with clean, dechlorinated water.

As I said, that is the general rule. If you are heavily stocked or under-filtered, you may have to them more often. While cycling with fish in a new tank, you may even have to do them twice a day to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels down. On the other hand, if you are lightly stocked, you may be able to go 2 or 3 weeks between changes.

Just look at the tank and test the parameters. If the water looks good, your ammonia and nitrite readings are at 0 (anything else means that you have problems) and your nitrate reading is less than about 20-40 (nitrate becomes toxic at higher levels), your water is in good shape. After all, the main reason for a water change is to do a gravel vacuum and to lower nitrates.

Change the water of your tank every week-every two weeks at most. Also don't forget to vacuum your gravel. Theres no need to completely wash that as it will damage your beneficial bacteria colonies. Best wishes to you!

20-25% with a gravel vac. Weekly would be better, but you could go every other week, unless we're talking goldfish, then every week.
