Fish - March 2007

My goldfish has a beautiful angelic tail it's getting chewed up. All the fish are getting along when I watch them even hours at a time. Every morning my goldfish has a piece of tail missing. His tail is getting shorter. I wonder if it hurts at all. They all look so happy together even when they eat. So I'm not sure If he would get lonely alone in another tank?

My tank is 30 gallon there is a pleco in the tank also. Originally the GT was the first in the tank. I put the FH in later. I have moved the rocks around a few times and he still keeps the GT at the top of the tank. There are lots of places to hide so that is not the issue. He doesn't mess with the pleco. He's just about torn through the GT's side. They are just about the same size the GT might even be a bit larger.

I read that if you put multiple chiclids in the same tank they won't be able to kill each other as easy. It kind of makes sense because that's what the pet store does and they seem to be ok. Anybody able to give some advice for a successful aggressive tank?

I have a 20 gal. tank, I had 5 small parrots in it for about 3 weeks in order to keep them safe while cycling my new 55 gal. They developed ich I treated the water today is the 5th day. I treated with 20 quick cure drops the first day, same second day, 25% water change 3rd plus added 20 more drops, 4th day added 20 more drops. Ok now on day one all my parrot fish were covered in white spots except for the blue it had just a couple spots and they quickly disapeared now for 4 days no spots, itching a little on the tank decoration and stuff but eating good looking very active and healty. How do I know when it is completely safe for me to put him in my new tank, Oh and by the way all others died, he is the only one left. What do I do? How do I know that he wont come up with it again later. And how should I treat my tank daily or should I not treat any more and see if he gets it again. I just dont know what to do any help would be greatly appreciated.

For some reason, now whenever he sees his tail....he would think its so hummy and take a bite. But its tearing it up!! >.< I always knock on the glass to make him look somewhere else and forget about his yummy tail. I dropped BettaFix this afternoon with a water change...would it help?

Okay, I'm really confused. I was checking on my bettas and I noticed that they were acting sick. I was esp worried about one that seemed to be losing his color. He is normally a dark grayish blue but he seemed to have turned a white color. I came to my computer asked a question about it waited for a couple of answers and then went to go check on him again. He is now his normal color!!! I'm so confused!

Well, i've been setting up my aquarium for my Bettas for a while now, and today i moved my two females in there. It's a 20 gallon tank, so i decided to go out and get 3 more female Bettas. I introduced them slowly to the tank and made sure they didn't fight or anything. They seem to get along great, but for the last 2 hours, they seem to all huddle together in the corner. I read that that means they don't like their tank, but there's plenty of room, and places for them to hide. Is this just what they do, or do i need to change something?

also, i have a male in a different tank, and he's doing the same thing...

I am in need of a new power filter, I currently have a penguin bio-wheel 200 but I will be giving that to a friend, what problems, if any, will I run into if i purchase a Emperor 400(400gph-up to 80gl)? Because I plan on getting a larger tank sometime. I am worried about what that large of a filter will do to my 20gl.

my son was given a 1gl 'aquatic garden' fishtank. The friend who gave this to us told me that he'd had 2 goldfish in there with almost no maintenance. Now I've cleaned everything with vinegar and water(google), added Start Up, and ran out and bought two goldfish, 1 starter and 1 of the $2.50 variety. I tried to give them a good home(I'm a complete novice) and bought the little aquaman aerator, the little 3 gl mechanical filter, new gravel, etc. But upon doing research it seems I've already made about 3 MAJOR errors and one of my fish is paying the price(listing, no appetite).
#1. I now realize this 1 gallon tank is completely inadequate to hold goldfish. #2. I didn't get the filter until today(24 hours) and had no idea ammonia could build so quickly. Does the mechanical filter even help here? #3. I added both the fish AND the store water to my tank immediately without allowing them time to adjust.
So is the one fish a goner? Do I need to tell my son that his new tank is no good?

Okay, this is the first time that my betas have ever shared water with another beta since I got them. I'm not sure if they are just sleeping or if they are sick. They just sit there without any movement at all, but if I tap the tank they move. One of my crowntails doesn't move much when he tries to swim. It seems as if he is only using the front portion of his body. Is it because I woke him up or do I need to get him some medicine. I think that one of my others is losing his color as well. Is that a sign of sickness?

i currently have two blood parrot cichlids and they are extremely affectionate and playful with me. I want to set up a new 55 gallon freshwater environment with more aggressive fish. I also would like it if they were playful, (coming to the surface for food or following you around the room). any suggestions? my ideal tank would be 2 very aggressive fish paired off with 2 other aggressive fish that are fun to own and wouldnt kill each other. has anyone had any success in running a tank like this?

I need help figuring out what is wrong with my angels. In a new 10 gallon tank that had 2 5'' plecos a giant danio and tiger barb I returned all those fish and got 3 1/2 inch angels. Now one of them is swimming around erratically on its side, the other two appear fine. I checked the ammonia this morning and it was zero. After I saw he wasn't doing well I checked again and it was at ~.15. Is that enough to kill him?

Now I have 2 angels same size in an established 120 gallon tank and one of those is now showing same simptoms. There are many fish in there all look healthy and all water perameters are good. These two tanks have not been in contact with each other in any way.

Please help me.

i was reading some of the other questions on this website and i came across one that said if you add salt to the water it will make the fish healthier and happy is this true i never knew that if it is. i have a 30 gallon tank with guppies,blue plattys etc...

I didn't rinse this stuff before adding it to my 30 gallon tank. All that is in the tank right now is a mixture of 15 pounds of Flourite seachem, 25 pounds of gravel, and 30 gallons of foggy foggy water. There is no filtration yet, just sitting foggy water. I do have a fluorescent light, should I put it on?

I have 2 oscars and lately all they've been doing is hanging around the surface of the water. Also I bought some comet feeders today and 6 have died and are floating around but not because of the oscars. The rest of the feeders are hanging at the surface as well. Whats wrong with my fish/water?

I bought a yellow tang from World of Pets in Brooklyn for $50 one Sunday and the next day, it killed my other tangs and butterflies and became very territorial. So I decided to return the fish on the same day I saw my other fishes dead which is Monday. However, the pet store didn't want to give me back $50 instead they only gave me $25 fish credit...I think its unfair eventhough its my fault that I didn't know the fish was aggressive coz even the clerk told me the fish is in a perfect condition plus the former sales manager of petland discounts who works for me also has the same opinion...I literally felt like they stole $25 from me. I am even a member of that store and they didn't even accomodate me properly.They even looked at how many purchases I did with their store to see if I deserve to get the same amount of my money back. They even said I only bought minor stuffs from their store thats why they cant trust me with the fish I returned...How should I deal with it?

I got a vase of flowers for Valentine's day, and now the flowers are dead and I have this gallon-sized clear glass vase just sitting there. I wanted to get some fish to put in it to brighten up my dorm. But I'm on a college budget, and I don't want to get a whole aquarium with a filter, bubble-thing, and heater. That would defeat the purpose of having something to do with the vase.

I've heard that goldfish don't actually do well in bowls, despite the stereotype. I know that fighting fish are generally considered the best bet, but those guys always look so sad to me... or is that just because in the pet store they're in tiny little cups?

So, do fighting fish do anything but lie on the bottom of small tanks, and if they don't, what are my other options? And how much can I reasonably expect to pay for a couple of fish and some rocks or whatever?
