With very careful maintainance 7-8, but only with extra careful maintainance. It will depend a little on exactly which fish you are talking about as well.
Also, never, ever use the insanely stupid 1" per gallon "rule" it's totally and completely bogus. At least as bad is the 1 fish per gallon "rule" Totally ignore any of this formula fish keeping nonsense.

I would only add about 3 or 4 fish even though the rule is one gallon per inch of fish. Thinking about space, the amount of waste produced by the fish, and their aggression factors are important to consider as well. If you want to add many fish I would stick with something very small like guppies, as many smaller fish do best in higher numbers to feel comfortable. Since you plan to have the eclipse system, give it a week or 2 before you add any fish. The eclipse systems have the biowheel filter that gets colonized with beneficial bacteria, and if you do fishless cycling then that would make the water safer for fish. Take your time and consider the pros and cons of what fish you can get and their requirements more as opposed to how many fish you can keep. Best wishes to you!

I was told you can have 6 inches worth of fish in a 6 gallon tank. However many gallons your tank is, that's how many "inches" of fish you can have. I've always done well going by that standard. I have a 30 gallon tank.

I was always told one inch per fish... that would mean that you could have 6 1 inch fish.. HOWEVER if you have a good filter nad you change a portion of your water more often, then you can have more... I had almost 18 small fish in my 10 gallon tank and didnt have a problem.

The general rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. If you have goldfish, I wouldn't keep that many, though. Goldfish are pretty dirty.

what kind of fish are you planning to get? are you planning to get tropical fish? For tropical fish, you can keep up to 6 fish in that size of a tank, but the conditions (pH, ammonia levels, water temperature, etc.) have to be very stable.

Since you no doubt have gravel and aquarium plants and other decorations (hopefully, for your fishies' sake), probably 4-5 would be best.
Or a beautiful betta. It would be very happy with that tank

Different thoughts on this one, but I go with 6. My experience has been fish do better if they are not crowed.
Good Luck, and enjoy!
