I bought a yellow tang from World of Pets in Brooklyn for $50 one Sunday and the next day, it killed my other tangs and butterflies and became very territorial. So I decided to return the fish on the same day I saw my other fishes dead which is Monday. However, the pet store didn't want to give me back $50 instead they only gave me $25 fish credit...I think its unfair eventhough its my fault that I didn't know the fish was aggressive coz even the clerk told me the fish is in a perfect condition plus the former sales manager of petland discounts who works for me also has the same opinion...I literally felt like they stole $25 from me. I am even a member of that store and they didn't even accomodate me properly. They even looked at how many purchases I did with their store to see if I deserve to get the same amount of my money back. They even said I only bought minor stuffs from their store thats why they cant trust me with the fish I returned...How should I deal with it?

Unfortunately if this is their policy not much you can do. I would have put up a fuss with the manager before I left the store. If the sales rep told you one thing and it turned out to be another you had a leg to stand on.

I returned a porc puffer (the next day) who terrorized my tank. My store gave me 100% refund. Honestly, if that is infact their policy find out why. I would look for a better store, especially since you are a good customer. If that were the case they could tell you anything just to buy incompatable fish. Let's say a puffer goes well and doesn't eat smaller fish. Then you wake up and find your tank wiped out. Poor advice first of all isn't what you are looking for in a store. you want someone you can trust, especially if you are spending that kind of money.

I would try tofind a different store that is more concerned with the welfare of your fish and your tank not about how much money they are putting in the register.

If thats their policy there is really nothing you can do. It's very unfortunate that this happened though. I think all you can do is make it a point to know the return policy of the store that you buy your fish from. A lot of stores would not have taken the fish back at all. They are just afraid of the stress of the fish being transported. Also, even though you may maintain a well kept tank, they don't know that.

So sorry to hear about your loss, but to avoit this in the future, make sure you know how the store will deal with this type of problem.

Good Luck, and I hope you never have to deal with this type of situation again.

The fish was doing what it should have. Tangs cannot be mixed and a yellow can only be kept in groups of 6 or more. Depending on the type(s) of butterfly, you should expect the same problem.

A little research would have saved you all of this trouble. And...no quarantine?? You cannot trust that any fish is disease-free. The salespeople will tell you what you want to hear so you buy the fish.

Yes, you are lucky they gave you anything at all. Some stores don't refund any money for saltwater fish. Stores expect that saltwater people know how they are stocking and what they are doing, not to mention how much harder it is to get saltwater fish.
Tang should never be housed with others of their species (including different colors). They are aggressive fish and you should have known that before buying the fish.

Most stores other than the chains don't take back fish or guaranty them. One LFS I deal with hold most fish about a week before placing them for sale to make sure you are buying healthy fish. They feel the fish left the store healthy, if it died, it probably wasn't their fault.
