Okay, I'm really confused. I was checking on my bettas and I noticed that they were acting sick. I was esp worried about one that seemed to be losing his color. He is normally a dark grayish blue but he seemed to have turned a white color. I came to my computer asked a question about it waited for a couple of answers and then went to go check on him again. He is now his normal color!!! I'm so confused!

Wow! Thanks to you guys who have heard of this before! I guess I just never noticed it in my darker bettas. This is the first time that I've bought a light colored one! Thanks again for easing my worries.... I'm a little tired, but I didn't think I was that tired!

your betta is losing color. OK, here is a new concept for a few of you. Betta colors are organized in layers, and some layers are always at the top. For example, black covers red. So a betta might be red, with a black layer on top. Sorta think of it as a wall that has been painted several times. One coat or red paint, then a coat of black paint. Now, if you do not know there is a red coat underneath the black, you would think it is just a black wall. But peel off the black layer of paint and you will see red underneath. Likewise if your betta has a red layer under his black layer, and if, when he sleeps, his black pigment becomes less intense (a normal betta thing), you would then be able to see the red layer peaking 'below'. Hence making his head look now 'red'. Could be one explanation.
Other option: you are looking at your betta with artificial light (flash light, table top light, any light source) at night. The light may refract and show a different color. For example, and as an interesting experiment, I want all of you tonight to go get a flashlight (not TOO powerful please, we don't want to make the bettas blind now) and to gently shine it on your bettas. You will be amazed how different some of them will look under a flashlight! Primarily a lot more blue or green iridescence will appear, some you never even know was there!

Fish are known to decrease in color dramatically during the times that they rest. Also, if you don't have a heater in your tank, the tank may have changed in temp overnight and heated back up during the day. Your Betta was probably just "sleeping" then saw you and woke up. I breed Bettas and my bettas do the same thing. But if any of them are looking sickly and not returning to normal color then you might want to investigate further. Remember, the most common cause of death in bettas is boredom. This can easily be fixed by putting him into an actual aquarium with a heater and filter. And a couple danios (bite size) can help keep them active. This worked great getting one of my bettas back to health.

Well some of these guys are right and most are wrong. Some bettas can and do have a color blend. When they get excite or upset they can change color. They will also change depending on the environment. I have notice that the reds don't change as much its mostly the blues, purple, whites, yellows and almost all the variations. Also they can change in less then a minute.

You betta is not losing color or changing color or anything of the sort. They reason he would have changed like that is stress. There is no way to know from your question what could have caused the stress, maybe lights going on and off, but that's the cause.

I personally have not ever experienced that with any of the bettas I have had. I know if you place a mirror by their bowl and they see themselves, they flare, making their colors brighter and their top fins, etc. really showing off. Take care.
