Is it okay to have a suckerfish with goldfish? I know they give off a lot of ammonia but some places say it's a bad idea and others say it is okay. SO i need some help!

Um... well... yes and no. Yes because he will eat leftover food (not poop though, you still have to vacuum). No because plecos have been known to eat the slime off goldfish at night, which can cause infections to the goldfish. If you keep the temp at 77 degrees F then both fish should be comfortable.

I don't think he's asking about bettas...

The problem with the ammonia is just that...so as long as you're filtration and water change routine is up to scratch you don't need to worry about ammonia.

The next problem is that one is tropical and one is coldwater...you will need to work out what 'suckerfish' you are going for and tell us...so that we can establish whether temperature is compatible with the coldwater goldfish.

The real problem can be that your 'suckerfish' will not 'know' how to react with your goldfish...in that they don't occur naturally together. So you could be lucky or unluck with compatabitlity based on the individual characteristics of your fish. That means most people will either say 'no never do this' or 'I have one in with mine and it works'...you just can't take the people who have one with their goldfish as proof positive that it will work for you.

The practical problem is space...a common plec can be a foot and a half long, and goldfish get big (as you probably know). Some of the smaller plecs (bristlenose) top out at 6 inches give or take.

The real question is why you want a suckerfish in there...most people think a plec will eat fish waste and they won't have to clean the tank/change water as often with one in there. This isn't so - the plec is a net contributor to waste (one of the messiest fish around).

Ultimately, the safest advise is not to try it...but you might be lucky. I keep rift lake ciclids and I LOVE plecs - but I won't be putting one in with my fish because I don't want to take the risk.

If you have a tank large enough they would be fine together. Keep in mind that the Pleco will get to be around 2 ft. They require a very large tank. You don't mention how large your tank is. I don't mean to offend if you already know this, but a lot of folks don't know just how big this fish can and will get. I had one once and it was a great fish. When I got it, I was quite the beginner and was told that he wouldn't get much more than 3 inches. When it hit about 8 inches in my 10 gal. aquarium, I decided it was time to learn a little more about him. I ended up having to give him to an aquarium shop who in turn found him a good home.

Good Luck

No, suckerfish are tropical fish and need a temp of abiut 78-80 degrees. Goldfish are freshwater fish and need a colder temp.So no.
